I could have added one in our consistent scoring droughts that happen routinely, but I dont have the stats on that, but there have been two other disturbing trends that have taken place under HCTMs tenure as coach at NU.
Disturbing trend number 1
The first disturbing trend is how we are finishing seasons, latter half of the seasons. The last three years we have finished 10-35 in the last half of seasons. If we go year by year we see that this trend has happened 4 of the 5 years TM has been here:
(2016-17) 3-13 in our last 16 games
(2015-16) 4-10 in our last 14 games
(2014-15) 3-12 in our last 15 games including losing our last 9 straight
(2013-14) 10-5 in our last 15 games (tourney year our one good end of season in TM's NU era)
(2012-13) 6-9 in our last 15 games.
These results seem to speak for themselves and show a pattern that our teams have a habit of playing their worst basketball towards the end of the season. I dont think too many fans or even coaches would think that this is a good sign or a good trend. I also dont see how fans or even coaches would consider these results to be what one would call "good coaching" by any stretch of the imagination.
Disturbing trend number 2
HCTM is tied with Rutgers for the most 5 game plus losing streaks during his tenure.
Tim Miles teams have lost 5 (or more in a row) SIX times in 5 years including two separate 5 game losing streaks THIS season. Rutgers, the DUMPSTER FIRE of a program they have had is the only other B10 team that has as many 5 plus game losing streaks since 12-13 season.
HCTM is the ONLY coach in the B10 (yes not even Rutgers) that has had 5 plus game losing streaks in EVERY single year since the 12-13 season: So we can say he is consistent in something, yes it is a bad something, but something nontheless.
Here is the list of teams and the number of 5 plus game losing streaks they have had since 12-13
tOSU 0
Iowa 0
MSU 0
WI 0
MD 0
Ill 1
Ind 1 this year which is why Creen is on the hot seat, one of the reasons at least.
Mich 1
Pur 1
Min 3
NW 4
PSU 5
Rut 6
NU 6
As you can see we are firmly at sharing the bottom with the bottom half dwellers of the conference in 5 game losing streaks, but are the worst of the worst all things considering. Facilities, fan support, compared to Rutgers who we can all agree their program has been the worst of the worst in the B10 the last several years.
This is another trend in addition to our year end results that shows our coaching is not good, and is just not consistent. Well not consistent on a good basis, but IS consistent on a BAD LEVEL.
This is a real head scratcher to me as to why our AD would bring back this coach not only based on everything, but especially when you look a little deeper at some of the disturbing trends above that I have laid out for you. There are other disturbing things in the bball program, but I just wanted you guys to just take these two in and see what your thoughts were.
