The problem with going to 105 so quickly is with Covid that allowed the schools to carry much bigger rosters and now they are basically pulling the rug from out beneath them .
Nebraska has a super engaged fan base. This board takes that up to another level. If you're a guy on the roster that 90% of us have never heard of, you're not actually "in" the sport. You're a glorified tackling dummy. You can debate 105 or 125 - 150+ is just stupid. My opinion is that its actually been a detriment to the focus of our coaches. I know what my opinion is worth, but I'm very happy that this rule finally forces Nebraska to abandon this huge roster.
Didn’t really take the Nebraska rival boards to be a bunch of fans of participation trophies until you all started crying over walk ons having to stop hanging on to being the cool kid in high school, poor kids have to actually do something with their lives instead of wearing free adidas gear to get laid

We are in agreement completely. I know our fans enjoyed the big roster and the bunch of hometown stories that come with them. But in actuality after you get so deep in the 120s you are probably dealing with guys who won't ever play a meaningful down. What good is it to have 150 guys if 35 or so if them are basically "tomato cans"? Just never made sense to me. Again I doubt the coaches would ever mention it publicly but if bet deep down they absolutely appreciate working with a smaller roster.

The coaches went after these PWOs and they chose DONU over other options. You can just toss them out and not give a crap, but I think they are being hosed. As I said, this wouldnt have been difficult to say “in four years”, not right away which screws kids who had no idea this would happen when they signed.
Also, you say wont play, but freshmen walk ons never play. Nebraska has had many develop and play, many have excelled. Now we’ll never know.

I am not arguing what the roster size should be.
I am also not arguing how many future walk ons I want the staff to go after.
I am saying its horseshit, and unacceptable, for the ncaa to screw kids over, both walk on and scholarship, who when they signed at NU over other options had no idea this was going to happen and are now left without a home.
I can tell you guys DGAF about anyone who isnt a superstar right now, but many of these kids were recruited by our coaches and have done everything right and worked hard, and dont deserve this. It is what it is but there are reasons to not like the way its being handled.
I agree with this. There are a lot of Huskers in the portal right now that won’t find a home. Matt took a lot of project recruits in year 1 that he won’t be able to give a chance to now. It’s going to make the FCS and smaller FBS schools stronger but a lot like a farm system. You recruit guys to a big school, they will get less time to grow and replaced by guys from MAC schools or FCS schools. Then hopefully the kids that were recruited at Power conference that are washed out will end up at MAC or FCS schools. So why not just allow trades at this point?
It worked well for us in a different era's that we we're successful. That is the past and sometimes hard to let go.
The new limit allows for the old 85 scholarship number plus the paid version of 20 of what were known as preferred walk ons. And let’s face it, in any year, there are going to be several kids that fit the development slot in that old 85 number just like we have now. Plenty of spots for worthy kids who are not highly rated coming out of high school.

I get your point. I also understand some kids will be left out di to things beyond there control. I get that and it is sad for those kids.
My point is that moving forward I understand and appreciate the fact that it's not necessary to have "bodies" who won't ever play. It's not even about being a superstar either. You talk about putting words in someone's mouth where did I ever say that? At some point the thing was gonna change. Someone was gonna get lost in the shuffle and it does suck for them. I can understand that and still be ok with smaller more manageable rosters.
Every time a coach came in and talked about cutting roster sizes down to be more manageable people acted like the coach was wrong. Or somehow shitting in tradition. I feel like now that it's mandated some people still feel that way. I just think at some point it was inevitable and I'm ok with it.

Now they’ll go to SDSU, USD, UNI or UND and if they prove it there while maybe on scholarship, they might have a chance to get paid to play at NU. Seems like a better deal for them to me. I would bet all of our walk ons could have the opportunity to play elsewhere IF they want. It might be at Wayne State, Kearney or Chadron but they could play.
I appreciate your position, it commendable. It’s not exactly that I DGAF, it’s that I feel P4 football has been dog-eat-dog for a long time and I think these kids will be fine. My kid got cut from a JUCO baseball team, no shame in that it has been happening to 100s of guys in JUCO baseball for years and years. He sucked it up and found a place to play and had a really good year last season. It was a very hard but valuable life lesson.
It's amazing how many so called Husker fans are willing to take a dump on the walk on program. Like it's not even not raising a peep but actively celebrating its disolution. Not every kid wants to go to some dumpy commuter school to play football. And the walk on program was really the only way to give late bloomer Nebraska kids a chance. Wouldn't have had John Bullock, Andy Janovich, and a bunch of other native Nebraskans a chance to make an impact for their home state team. The walk on program was a chance to give small western Nebraska towns a chance to care about a Lincoln team when they otherwise wouldn't have given a shit. I don't think that should be discounted especially with how different the culture is between western Nebraska and the two eastern cities. And I still think it's ridiculous how roster limits can even be enforced from an outside institution. The school sanctions its own team and should be able to have as many players available for practices as it so desires.

Walk-on program wasn't helping us win. In fact, I think it was becoming more of a burden then anything. 60? 70 walk-ons on the roster, how many starters? How many 2 deep. That's on losing teams. Not even good teams. How many would there have been on a 10 win team that we all want?
If kids truly want to play for NU then go tear it up in FCS and come back to NU later.

You really that clueless? PR is a real thing and the Nebraska fan base (see: mirror) would have thrown a damn fit if Rhule had unilaterally eliminated the walkon program. Personally, I think Rhule came here believing in development and really thought that the large roster/walk on program WOULD be an advantage for Nebraska. It took him an extra year to acknowledge that the world shifted under his feet and that the only way to win now is to build the best team you can every year. Like everyone else.
Are you here to win or are you here to mosey it up at the pancake feeds? Maybe it's just me, but I'd like a win at all costs coach.
Because it wouldn't matter what he accomplished if he dissolved the walk-on program. He would be hated by a large part of the fan base. He is also a former walk-on himself, so he probably ate up how important the walk-on program is to our success.
Reality is it WAS important to our success. That stopped years ago. I'm glad and sad to see it go, but there are 20 extra scholarships available now. Nebraska kids can go earn a few of those.
You cry in post 377 about people not caring about the loss of the walk-on program. Then you claim to be all about winning in post 384. Classic.
I can't believe someone like yourself doesn't understand the walk-on program just became a burden and allowed coaches like Bo and Frost to use it lazily fill recruiting misses with 3rd string quality players. Whether it's Rhule or someone else, the 105 means the coach puts their money where their mouth is and can't use the walk-on program as a reason to slow play Nebraska kids. Evaluate and figure out if they are scholarship worthy. Otherwise hope they go FCS, succeed, and come back around.
Yep. 1 starter out of 66 walk-ons. Would we have been so much worse off with Shavers starting? You also have Seagren and Lindenmeyer in the 2 deep. The walk-on program was definitely instrumental in getting us those 7 wins.
Change sucks. We'll all miss the walk-on program and cheering for the hometown kids, but their will still be a few around on scholarship.
