I was looking for older Deere tractors for my Daughter and Son in law. I came across a 1970 3020 gas burner that brought up old memories. Summer 1970 FFA tractor backing contest. Local John Deere dealership provided a new 3020 (also a gas burner) with a shifter next to the steering wheel. When my turn came up I (shy of 15 and 100#) climbed on that platform, looked at it and said I don't how you use this tractor (I had practiced with Dad's Series IV D17 with a shifter between your legs). Laughter from the fathers. The John Deere salesman knew opportunity when it happens. He came up, no problem Son I'll show you how to use it. He proceeded to show off all the bells and whistles a new John Deere tractor in 1970 had. Especially a tilt (?) and telescoping steering column and easy adjust seat for "such a little guy". I was sitting on that seat in front of God and community embarrassed like no other (I hope girls are not seeing this). Anyway, he taught me how to use reverse and the first two forward speeds and my time started. I did get the wagon moved from dock to dock inside of allotted time but I was the slowest of the 4 of 20 something that were able to do so.
