Does anyone know what goes into the decision on whether Tommy will be available or not for the game vs Minnesota?

I assume there is concussion protocol but I don't know the timing of these tests and when a decision would be made.

I'll be honest when he was laying motionless I didn't think we'd see him again all year but then watching him jog back gave me hope that he will be fine.

Time will tell but I'm hopeful he's able to play.

Riley said he would know more today but I have heard nothing. My guess is he will undergo further tests and we will hear something tomorrow .

Leidner from Minnesota had a concussion in the Iowa game don't know if their staff knew or not but he sat out the next game against Maryland but game back the next week against Rutgers...

Hoping for the best and Tommy plays. It wouldn't surprise me if they set him out this week...

Wish we were playing Maryland this week instead of the Gophers.

With the way TA was jogging back into the stadium and being that alert, I am guessing there is no concussion. being around football, Ive seen plenty of concussions and the large majority arent jogging anywhere for a few days. I am again guessing that most of that was precautionary as he got knocked out. I feel he will be playing against Minny. That is just my guess.

I don't think I have ever seen a guy knocked unconscious and not have a concussion.

I was wondering the same.. but maybe it's different. For guys in MMA or Boxing, when they get knocked out, is it always a concussion? I'm not sure it's medically the same.

don't jump to conclusions on concussions. There are multiple categories and levels and it is very specific. Even a kid who gets a ding in a PE class has to go through the protocol and there are very specific guidelines according to findings. Just because he ran in doesn't mean anything. I didn't see the game so I can't say what that looked like. To be certain they will have multiple doctors go through the assessment and make the call. I don't know in colleges but in the pros they have independent docs make the call which is a good idea. From my past experience with kids in HS, even a lower level concussion requires some time off from specific activities.

I'm guessing they will make him sit out this week. Lots of emphasis on head trauma these days. He's still a college student. This isn't the NFL with multi-million $ contracts.

Yes they can be at various levels. I just dont see any Dr in their right mind letting a guy (especially your starting qb) go running back to the field and be under those bright lights with 105 thousand people screaming. Sure its possibken but just dont seem to be "keeping his best interest in mind). TA knows this is his last year of playing football. He probably knows he isnt going pro and good luck getting him to sit out any of his final 4 games. That guy is a freaking monster when it comes to taking hits and getting back up. Its just strange to me that they let him do that.

Of course this is all just opinion and from what I have been around. obviously with high schoolers, they will be a little more cautious with. It really amazes me how he got back from the hospital that fast.

A concussion is defined as a head injury with a temporary loss of brain function. Being knocked unconscious is, by definition, a concussion.

Yes I know the definition. but you can get knocked out and have a very mild concussion and still play. if there was soemthing that said differently, they wouldnt have let him come running onto the field 30 minutes later.

Definition of a Concussion

Concussion is a serious brain injury that can occur in both non-contact and contact sports. This injury results from the rapid translational (linear front-to-back, side-to-side) or rotational (angular) movement of the multi-lobular brain within the skull. Such rapid movement can result in damage or disruption of the brain cell structure and metabolism.

Altered brain function may result from this trauma and be expressed in a variety of physical symptoms (e.g., headaches, dizziness, sensitivity to light and sound), physical signs (e.g., loss of balance and coordination), cognitive deficits (e.g., memory and concentration losses) or emotional changes (e.g., depression and irritability). These signs or symptoms may occur immediately after the injury, or onset may be delayed.

The majority of concussions do not result in a loss of consciousness. If a player is suspected of having a concussion, he/she must be removed from the field of play and properly evaluated by a medical professional experienced in concussion diagnosis and treatment.

Edit:
I've also read that Concussion is simply the brain hitting the cranium due to a large blow. being ko'd happens when you get clipped in the jaw area, a nervous system response, which is different.

Well I can tell you that concussion experts hate the term "Mild" concussion. There isn't some sort of magic bullet grading system. A concussion is a concussion.

Some people respond differently, some have symptoms right away, some feel fine and a few days later have the annoying light sensitivity and other side effects. We will know nothing until mid week when he's gone through concussion protocol.

My gut is he probably is 50/50 this week depending on onset timing and severity of symptoms.

A few years ago a MSU defensive player got knocked out on the field, came off for a few minutes, and Dantonio played him the rest of the game. Some called him old school, some called him a few choice words not fit for this website.

Nebraska is supposed to have the "concussion" analysis center. Hopefully they will figure out the after effects of a kid who is knocked out on a play. The only fact I know is he was lights out for a period of time.

According to a tweet not long ago Tommy is listed as the starter for Minnesota. Retweeted by Damon Benning from the Land of 10 twitter for what its worth.
