1900 - Galveston, Texas was struck by a hurricane that killed more than 8,000 people.

1921 - Margaret Gorman of Washington, D.C. was crowned the first Miss America in Atlantic City, New Jersey.

1943 - Ace Adams of the New York Giants sets a major league record by working in his 62nd game of the year.

1946 - The San Francisco 49ers play in their first AAFC game, losing to the New York Yanks 21-7.

1954 - With a 3-2 count, Philadelphia Phillies player Richie Ashburn fouls off the next 14 pitches before ultimately drawing a walk.

1965 - Bert Campaneris of the Kansas City Athletics plays all nine positions in a game.

1972 - Ferguson Jenkins of the Chicago Cubs wins his 20th game for the sixth straight year.

1973 - Tom Osborne made his head coaching debut, leading #4 Nebraska to a 40-13 win over #10 UCLA.

1984 - #2 Nebraska defeated Wyoming 42-7.

1985 - Pete Rose of the Cincinnati Reds tied Ty Cobb's career record for hits with his 4,191st during a game against the Chicago Cubs.

1990 - #10 Nebraska defeated Northern Illinois 60-14.

1991 - Jim Kelly of the Buffalo Bills throw six touchdown passes in a 52-34 win over the Pittsburgh Steelers.

1994 - #1 Nebraska defeated Texas Tech 42-16.

1998 - Mark McGwire of the St. Louis Cardinals broke the major league single season home run record of 61 held by Roger Maris after he hit his 62nd home run of the year in a game against the Chicago Cubs.

2001 - #5 Nebraska defeated #17 Notre Dame 27-10.

2002 - Pete Sampras won a record 14th Grand Slam tennis title at the U.S. Open in New York. (The record has since been broken by Roger Federer.)

2007 - #16 Nebraska defeated Wake Forest 20-17.

2008 - Roger Federer defeats Andy Murray to win a fifth straight U.S. Open.

2012 - #16 Nebraska lost on the road to UCLA 30-36.
