1790 - The District of Columbia was established as the seat of the United States government.

1862 - Flag Officer David G. Farragut became the first rear admiral in the United States Navy.

1918 - Russia's Czar Nicholas II and his family were executed by the Bolsheviks.

1935 - The nation's first parking meters were installed in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.

1945 - The United States exploded its first experimental atomic bomb in the desert of Alamogordo, New Mexico; the same day, the heavy cruiser USS Indianapolis left Mare Island Naval Shipyard in California on a secret mission to deliver atomic bomb components to Tinian Island in the Marianas.

1951 - J.D. Salinger's novel "The Catcher in the Rye" is published.

1957 - Marine Corps Maj. John Glenn set a transcontinental speed record by flying a Vought F8U Crusader jet from California to New York in 3 hours, 23 minutes and 8.4 seconds.

1964 - As he accepted the Republican presidential nomination in San Francisco, Barry M. Goldwater declared that “extremism in the defense of liberty is no vice” and that “moderation in the pursuit of justice is no virtue.”

1969 - Apollo 11 blasted off on the first manned mission to the moon.

1979 - Saddam Hussein became president of Iraq.

1999 - John F. Kennedy Jr., his wife, Carolyn, and her sister, Lauren Bessette, died when their single-engine plane, piloted by Kennedy, plunged into the Atlantic Ocean near Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts.

2004 - Martha Stewart is sentenced to five months in prison and five months of home confinement by a federal judge in New York for lying about a stock sale.

2008 - Florida resident Casey Anthony, whose 2-year-old daughter, Caylee, had been missing a month, was arrested on charges of child neglect, making false official statements and obstructing a criminal investigation. (Casey Anthony was later acquitted at trial of murdering Caylee, whose skeletal remains were found in December 2008; Casey was convicted of lying to police.)

2015 - A jury in Centennial, Colorado, convicted James Holmes of 165 counts of murder, attempted murder and other charges in the 2012 Aurora movie theater rampage that left 12 people dead.

2017 - Ten people died at a popular swimming hole in Arizona’s Tonto National Forest after a rainstorm unleashed a flash flood.

2018 - After meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Helsinki, President Donald Trump openly questioned the finding of his own intelligence agencies that Russia had meddled in the 2016 U.S. election to his benefit. (Trump said a day later that he misspoke.)

1909 - The Detroit Tigers and Washington Senators play the longest scoreless game in American League history (18 innings).

1941 - Joe DiMaggio of the New York Yankees successfully hits in his 56th consecutive game.

1950 - Uruguay defeated Brazil 2-1 to win the World Cup at Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The match was played before the largest live crowd in sporting history at 199,854.

1961 - American Ralph Boston sets a new world record in the long jump with a leap of 27 feet, 2 inches.

1964 - Little League Baseball Incorporated was granted a Federal Charter unanimously by the United States Senate and House of Representatives.

1985 - The All-Star Game, televised on NBC-TV, was the first program broadcast in stereo by a TV network.

1988 - Florence Joyner sets a new world record in the women's 100 meter dash at 10.49 seconds.

2017 - Kawhi Leonard re-signs with the San Antonio Spurs with a 5-year, $90 million contract.
