1504 - Michelangelo's towering marble statue of David was unveiled to the public in Florence, Italy.

1565 - A Spanish expedition established the first permanent European settlement in the present-day United States at what is now St. Augustine, Florida.

1664 - The Dutch surrendered New Amsterdam to the British, who renamed it New York.

1761 - Britain's King George III married Princess Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz a few hours after meeting her for the first time.

1892 - An early version of "The Pledge of Allegiance," written by Francis Bellamy, appeared in "The Youth's Companion." It went: "I pledge allegiance to my Flag and the Republic for which it stands, one nation, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all."

1900 - A hurricane struck Galveston, Texas, killing about 8,000 people.

1921 - Margaret Gorman of Washington, D.C. was crowned the first Miss America in Atlantic City, New Jersey.

1935 - Louisiana Senator Huey P. Long, the "Kingfish" of Louisiana politics, was shot and mortally wounded by Dr. Carl Austin Weiss, Jr.

1941 - A 900-day siege of Leningrad by German forces began during World War II.

1951 - The San Francisco Peace Treaty was signed, formally ending World War II hostilities with Japan.

1952 - Ernest Hemingway's "Old Man and the Sea" was published.

1966 - "Star Trek" premiered on NBC.

1974 - President Gerald Ford gave former President Richard Nixon a full pardon for all federal crimes he may have committed while he was in office.

1987 - Former Democratic presidential candidate Gary Hart admitted during an interview on ABC's "Nightline" that he had committed adultery, and said he had no plans to resume his White House bid.

1994 - USAir Flight 427, a Boeing 737, crashed into a ravine as it was approaching Pittsburgh International Airport, killing all 132 people on board. A mechanical failure was ruled to be the cause of the crash.

2006 - A Senate report faulted intelligence gathering in the lead-up to the 2003 U.S. invasion of Iraq.

2016 - California and federal regulators fined Wells Fargo a combined $185 million, alleging the bank's employees illegally opened millions of unauthorized accounts for their customers in order to meet aggressive sales goals.

1946 - San Francisco 49ers play first AAFC game, lose to New York Yankees 21-7.

1955 - The Brooklyn Dodgers clinch the National League pennant, setting a record for earliest pennant win.

1965 - Kansas City Athletics' Bert Campaneris plays all nine positions in a game, the first major league player to ever do so.

1972 - Chicago Cubs' Ferguson Jenkins wins his 20th game for 6th straight year.

1973 - Hank Aaron sets record of most home runs in one league (709).

1973 - Tom Osborne made his head coaching debut at Nebraska, leading the #4 Huskers to a 40-13 win over #10 UCLA to open the season.

1978 - Second game of the Boston Massacre; New York Yankees beat Boston Red Sox 13-2.

1984 - #2 Nebraska opened the season with a 42-7 win over Wyoming.

1985 - Pete Rose of the Cincinnati Reds tied Ty Cobb's career records for hits with his 4,191st during a game against the Chicago Cubs.

1986 - Herschel Walker made his start in the National Football League (NFL) after leaving the New Jersey Generals of the USFL.

1988 - Javier Sotomayer of Cuba becomes the first person to clear 8-feet in the high jump, a new world record.

1990 - #10 Nebraska defeated Northern Illinois 60-14.

1991 - Buffalo Bills' Jim Kelly passes for six touchdowns versus Pittsburgh Steelers (52-34).

1994 - #1 Nebraska defeated Texas Tech 42-16.

1998 - Mark McGwire of the St. Louis Cardinals hit his 62nd home run of the season in a game against the Chicago Cubs, breaking the single-season record of 61 held by Roger Maris.

2001 - #5 Nebraska defeated #17 Notre Dame 27-10. The game saw ESPN's "College GameDay" come to Lincoln.

2002 - Pete Sampras won a record 14th grand slam tennis title at the U.S. Open in New York. (The record has since been broken by Roger Federer.)

2002 - The NFL's Houston Texans played their first regular season game. The beat the Dallas Cowboys 19-10.

2007 - #16 Nebraska defeated Wake Forest 20-17.

2008 - Roger Federer wins a fifth straight US Open mens tennis title, defeating Andy Murray 6-2, 7-5, 6-2, in one hour 51 minutes at Flushing Meadows.

2012 - #16 Nebraska was upset by UCLA 36-30.
