1901 - President William B. McKinley was shot and mortally wounded by anarchist Leon Czolgosz at the Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo, New York. (He died on Sept. 14).

1916 - The first self-service grocery store, Piggly Wiggly, opened in Memphis, Tennessee by Clarence Saunders.

1941 - Jews over the age of 6 in German-occupied areas were ordered to wear yellow Stars of David.

1970 - Palestinian guerrillas seized control of three jetliners, which were later blown up on the ground in Jordan after the passengers and crews were evacuated.

1991 - The Soviet Union recognized the independence of Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia. Russian lawmakers upheld a decision by residents of Leningrad to restore the city's name to St. Petersburg.

1997 - Britain bade farewell to Princess Diana with a funeral service at Westminster Abbey. More than 2 billion people watched the service on television worldwide.

2004 - Former President Bill Clinton underwent successful heart bypass surgery.

2005 - The California Legislature became the first legislative body in the nation to approve same-sex marriages. (Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger later vetoed the bill.)

2006 - President George W. Bush acknowledged previously secret CIA prisons around the world and said 14 high-value terrorism suspects had been transferred from the system to Guantanamo Bay for trials.

2007 - Opera singer Luciano Pavarotti died at age 71.

1912 - Jeff Tesreau of the New York Giants no-hits the Philadelphia Phillies.

1946 - The All-American Football Conference, a precursor to the AFL, played its first game. The Cleveland Browns beat the Miami Seahawks 44-0.

1975 - 18-year-old Czechoslovakian tennis player Martina Navratilova, in New York for the U.S. Open, requested political asylum.

1980 - College football's longest losing streak of 50 games ends for Macalaster University (Minnesota), who beat Mount Senario 17-14.

1986 - #8 Nebraska defeated #11 Florida State 34-17.


1989 - The Amateur Athletic Federation strips Canadian sprinter Ben Johnson of all track records after he was found to have been using steroids.

1995 - Cal Ripken Jr. of the Baltimore Orioles broke Lou Gehrig's iron man record by playing in his 2,131st straight game.

1996 - Eddie Murray of the Baltimore Orioles hit his 500th career home run.

2001 - Barry Bonds of the San Francisco Giants became the fifth player in baseball history to hit 60 home runs in a season (joining Babe Ruth, Roger Maris, Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa).

2003 - #23 Nebraska defeated Utah State 31-7.

2008 - Nebraska defeated San Jose State 35-12.

2014 - #19 Nebraska defeated McNeese State 31-24.

2010 - Alex Rodriguez of the New York Yankees reaches 100 RBIs for a record 14th season, passing Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig and Jimmie Fox, all tied at 13 seasons.
