1861 - Union forces led by Gen. Ulysses S. Grant occupied Paducah, Kentucky, during the Civil War.

1901 - President William McKinley was shot by anarchist Leon Czolgosz at the Pan American Exposition in Buffalo, New York. (McKinley died on September 14th; Czolgosz was executed on October 29th.)

1916 - The first self-service grocery store, Piggly Wiggly, was opened in Memphis, Tenn., by Clarence Saunders.

1939 - South Africa declared war on Germany during World War II.

1941 - Nazi Germany required all Jews over the age of six to wear a yellow Star of David on their clothes.

1954 - Groundbreaking took place for the Shippingport Atomic Power Station in western Pennsylvania.

1970 - Palestinian guerrillas seized control of three jetliners, which were later blown up on the ground in Jordan after the passengers and crews were evacuated.

1997 - More than 2 billion people worldwide watched Princess Diana's funeral on television.

2002 - Meeting outside Washington, D.C. for only the second time since 1800, Congress convened in New York to pay homage to the victims and heroes of September 11.

2004 - Former President Bill Clinton successfully underwent heart bypass surgery.

2005 - The California Legislature became the first legislative body in the nation to approve same-sex marriages. (Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger later vetoed the bill.)

2006 - President George W. Bush acknowledged previously secret CIA prisons around the world and said 14 high-value terrorism suspects had been transferred from the system to Guantanamo Bay for trials.

2007 - Italian operatic tenor Luciano Pavarotti died at age 71.

1905 - Frank Smith (Chicago White Sox) pitched a no-hitter against the Detroit Tigers. The game set a record for the most lopsided margin of victory for a no-hitter in AL history (15-0).

1930 - Brooklyn Dodgers rout the Philadelphia Phillies 22-8.

1943 - The youngest player to appear in an American League baseball game was pitcher Carl Scheib of the Philadelphia Athletics. Scheib was 16 years, eight months and five days old.

1946 - The All-American Football Conference plays its first game, with the Cleveland Browns defeating the Miami Seahawks 44-0.

1975 - Czechoslovakian tennis player Martina Navratilova, in New York for the U.S. Open, requested political asylum.

1980 - College football's longest losing streak of 50 games ends for Macalaster University of Saint Paul, Minnesota beating Mount Senario 17-14.

1981 - Fernando Valenzuela (Los Angeles Dodgers) tied a National League record of seven shutouts by a rookie pitcher.

1986 - #8 Nebraska defeated #11 Florida State 34-17 to open the season.

1987 - Saskatchewan Rough Riders' Dave Ridgway kicks a Canadian Football League record 60-yard field goal.

1989 - Amateur Atheletic Federation strips Ben Johnson of all track records.

1995 - Baseball player Cal Ripken Jr. of the Baltimore Orioles broke Lou Gehrig's iron man record by playing in his 2,131st consecutive game.

1996 - Eddie Murray of the Baltimore Orioles hit his 500th career home run during a game against the Detroit Tigers. He became just the third player in major league history with 500 home runs and 3,000 hits.

2000 - Scott Sheldon (Texas Rangers) became the third player in major league baseball history to play all nine positions in one game.

2001 - Barry Bonds of the San Francisco Giants became the fifth player in baseball history to hit 60 home runs in a season. (He finished the year with a record 73 homers.)

2003 - #23 Nebraska defeated Utah State 31-7.

2008 - Nebraska defeated San Jose State 35-12.


2010 - New York Yankees' Alex Rodriguez reaches 100 RBIs for a record 14th season, passing Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, and Jimmie Fox, all tied at 13 seasons.

2014 - #19 Nebraska defeated McNeese State 31-24.
