1066 - William the Conqueror invaded England.

1542 - Portuguese explorer Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo arrived in present-day San Diego.

1781 - The closing campaign of the American Revolution began at Yorktown Heights, Virginia.

1787 - The Congress of the Confederation voted to send the just-completed Constitution of the United States to state legislatures for their approval.

1850 - Flogging was abolished as a form of punishment in the U.S. Navy.

1924 - Two U.S. Army planes landed in Seattle after completing the first around-the-world flight in 175 days.

1928 - Scottish medical researcher Alexander Fleming discovered penicillin, the first effective antibiotic.

1939 - A German-Soviet agreement divided Poland between Nazi Germany and the USSR during World War II.

1962 - A federal appeals court found Mississippi Gov. Ross Barnett in civil contempt for blocking the admission of James Meredith, a Black student, to the University of Mississippi. (Federal marshals escorted Meredith onto the campus two days later.)

1964 - Comedian Harpo Marx died in Los Angeles at age 75.

1967 - Walter Washington became the first mayor of the District of Columbia.

1972 - Japan and Communist China agreed to re-establish diplomatic relations.

1989 - Former Philippine President Ferdinand E. Marcos died in exile in Hawaii at age 72.

1995 - Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin and PLO chairman Yasser Arafat signed an accord at the White House ending Israel’s military occupation of West Bank cities and laying the foundation for a Palestinian state.

2000 - Capping a 12-year battle, the government approved the use of the RU-486 abortion pill.

2010 - The youngest son of North Korean President Kim Jong Il, Kim Jong Un, was selected for his first leadership post in the ruling Workers Party, putting him well on the path to succeed his father.

2015 - President Barack Obama and Russian President Vladimir Putin, meeting at the United Nations, agreed to discuss a political transition in Syria but remained at odds about what that would mean for Syria leader Bashar Assad’s future.

2015 - Former prison worker Joyce Mitchell, who’d helped two murderers escape from a maximum-security lockup, said she regretted her “horrible mistake” as she was sentenced in Plattsburgh, New York, to up to seven years behind bars.

2019 - A massive pro-democracy rally in downtown Hong Kong ended early and violently, with police firing tear gas and a water cannon after protesters threw bricks and Molotov cocktails at government buildings.

1892 - The first nighttime football game took place in Mansfield, Pennsylvania, as teams from Mansfield State Normal and Wyoming Seminary played under electric lights to a scoreless tie.

1901 - Nebraska defeated Kirksville Osteopaths 5-0.

1907 - Nebraska opened the season with a 53-0 win over Peru State.


1920 - Eight members of the Chicago White Sox were indicted for fixing the 1919 World Series against the Cincinnati Reds in the "Black Sox" scandal. (All were acquitted at trial, but all eight were banned from the game for life.)

1935 - Nebraska opened the season with a 28-7 win over the University of Chicago.

1941 - Ted Williams of the Boston Red Sox ended the regular season with a .406 batting average; he was the final player of the century to achieve a .400 average.

1946 - Nebraska opened the season with a 33-6 loss to Minnesota.

1955 - The World Series was televised in color for the first time, featuring the New York Yankees and the Brooklyn Dodgers.

1957 - Army defeated Nebraska 42-0.

1960 - Ted Williams hits the 521st and final home run of his career.

1963 - Nebraska defeated Minnesota 14-7.

1968 - #9 Nebraska defeated #17 Minnesota 17-14.


1969 - Joe Kapp of the Minnesota Vikings throws seven touchdown passes in a 52-14 win over the Baltimore Colts.

1974 - #10 Nebraska defeated Northwestern 49-7.

1976 - Muhammad Ali successfully defended his heavyweight championship in a 15-round decision over Ken Norton at Yankee Stadium.

1985 - #16 Nebraska defeated Oregon 63-0.

1986 - Tight end Brian Foster of Rhode Island catches an NCAA-record 18 passes for 327 yards.

1991 - #16 Nebraska defeated #24 Arizona State 18-9.

1995 - Randy Myers (Chicago Cubs) was charged by a 27-year-old man while standing in the outfield. Myers saw him coming, dropped his glove and knocked the man down with his forearm.

1996 - Running back Troy Davis of Iowa State rushes for 378 yards in a game against Missouri, the third-highest single game total in NCAA history at that time.

1996 - #8 Nebraska defeated Colorado State 65-9.

2002 - #19 Iowa State defeated #20 Nebraska 36-14.


2003 - Althea Gibson, the first African-American tennis player to win a Wimbledon championship, died at age 76.

2018 - Soccer superstar Cristiano Ronaldo is accused of rape in 2009 in a lawsuit filed in Nevada.

2019 - #5 Ohio State defeated Nebraska 48-7.
