1540 - Pope Paul III approved the charter for the Society of Jesus (Jesuits), founded by St. Ignatius Loyola.

1779 - John Adams was named by Congress to negotiate the Revolutionary War's peace terms with Britain.

1825 - The first locomotive to haul a passenger train was operated by George Stephenson in England.

1854 - The first great disaster involving an Atlantic Ocean passenger vessel occurred when the steamship SS Arctic sank off Newfoundland; of the more than 400 people on board, only 86 survived.

1928 - The United States recognized the Nationalist Chinese government.

1939 - Warsaw, Poland surrendered to the Nazis after weeks of resistance.

1942 - Glenn Miller and his Orchestra performed together for the last time, at the Central Theater in Passaic, New Jersey, prior to Miller's entry into the Army.

1959 - Typhoon Vera battered the Japanese island of Honshu, killing almost 5,000 people.

1964 - The Warren Commission report concluded that there was no conspiracy in the assassination of President John F. Kennedy and that Lee Harvey Oswald acted alone.

1979 - Congress gave final approval to creating the Department of Education.

1989 - Columbia Pictures Entertainment Inc. agreed to a $3.4 billion cash buyout by Sony Corp.

1990 - The Senate Judiciary Committee approved the Supreme Court nomination of David H. Souter.

1991 - President George H.W. Bush announced in a nationally broadcast address that he was eliminating all U.S. battlefield nuclear weapons, and called on the Soviet Union to match the gesture.

1991 - The Senate Judiciary Committee deadlocked, 7-7, on the nomination of Clarence Thomas to the Supreme Court.

1994 - More than 350 Republican congressional candidates signed the "Contract with America", a 10-point platform they pledged to enact if voters sent a GOP majority to the U.S. House.

1996 - The Taliban, a band of former seminary students, drove the government of Afghani President Burhanuddin Rabbani out of Kabul, captured the capital and executed former leader Najibullah.

2012 - Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told the U.N. General Assembly that the world had only a matter of months to stop Iran before it could build a nuclear bomb.

2016 - Scientists announced the first baby born from a controversial new technique that combined DNA from three people — the mother, the father and an egg donor. (The goal was to prevent the child from inheriting a fatal genetic disease from his mother.)

1902 - Nebraska defeated Doane College 51-0.

1904 - Nebraska defeated Lincoln High 17-0 in an exhibition game.


1923 - Lou Gehrig (New York Yankees) hit his first of 493 career home runs.

1930 - Hack Wilson (Chicago) hit two home runs to give him 56 for the year.

1930 - Bobby Jones completes the Grand Slam of Golf.

1930 - Chicago White Sox' first baseman Bud Clancy doesn't handle the ball at all in a 9-inning game versus Saint Louis Browns.

1930 - At the annual NHL Governor's meeting a new rule was passed concerning offsides. The rule was that "the puck must be propelled into the attacking zone before any player of the attacking side can enter that zone."

1931 - Lou Gehrig completes his 6th straight Major League Baseball season, playing in every game.

1942 - New York Giants beat Washington Redskins 14-7 without making a first down.

1947 - Indiana defeated Nebraska 17-0 to open the season.

1952 - Nebraska defeated Oregon 28-13.


1953 - The St. Louis Browns played their final game before moving to Baltimore to become the Orioles.

1958 - Purdue defeated Nebraska 28-0.

1967 - Philadelphia Phillies' Jim Bunning ties National League record of five 1-0 losses in a year.

1969 - Nebraska defeated Texas A&M 14-0.

1970 - Ken Boswell sets second baseman record of 85 games without an error.

1973 - California Angels' pitcher Nolan Ryan establishes a major league record striking out 383 batters in a season.

1975 - #4 Nebraska defeated TCU 56-14.

1980 - #3 Nebraska defeated #11 Penn State 21-7.


1983 - Larry Bird signed a seven-year contract with the Boston Celtics worth $15 million. The contract made him the highest paid Celtic in history.

1986 - #4 Nebraska defeated Oregon 48-14.

1996 - Barry Bonds of the San Francisco Giants became the second player in major league history with 40 home runs and 40 stolen bases in the same year.

1998 - Mark McGwire of the St. Louis Cardinals, in the last game of the regular season, hit his 69th and 70th home runs of the season, establishing the new single-season major league record.

1998 - Greg Vaughn of the San Diego Padres hit his 50th home run of the season, marking the first time in major league history that four players finished the regular season with 50 or more home runs (Mark McGwire, Sammy Sosa, Ken Griffey Jr.)

1999 - Tiger Stadium closed after 87 years as home of baseball's Detroit Tigers.

2000 - Donovan McNabb (Philadelphia Eagles) signed a 12-year contract that involved a $20.5 million signing bonus. The deal made McNabb the highest paid NFL player in history.

2000 - The United States Olympic team beats the favored Cuban team to win the country's first gold medal in baseball.

2003 - Javier Lopez (Atlanta Braves) became the first catcher to hit 42 home runs in a season.

2008 - Virginia Tech defeated Nebraska 35-30.

2009 - The Detroit Lions defeated the Washington Redskins to end a 19-game losing streak that began back in December of 2007.

2012 - NFL referees returned to the field after a tentative deal with the league ended a lockout; games had been marred by controversy, blown calls and confusion as substitute referees officiated during the first three weeks of the season.

2014 - #21 Nebraska defeated Illinois 45-14.
