1761 - Britain's King George III and his wife, Charlotte, were crowned in Westminster Abbey.

1776 - Nathan Hale was hanged by the British as a spy during the Revolutionary War.

1789 - Congress authorized the office of Postmaster-General.

1792 - The French Republic was proclaimed.

1862 - President Abraham Lincoln issued the preliminary Emancipation Proclamation, proposing to free all slaves of rebel states as of January 1, 1863.

1949 - The Soviet Union exploded its first atomic bomb.

1950 - Omar N. Bradley was promoted to the rank of General of the Army (five-star general), joining an elite group that included Dwight D. Eisenhower, Douglas MacArthur, George C. Marshall and Henry H. "Hap" Arnold.

1964 - The musical "Fiddler on the Roof" opened on Broadway, beginning a run of 3,242 performances.

1975 - Sara Jane Moore failed in an attempt to shoot President Gerald R. Ford outside a San Francisco hotel. (Moore served 32 years in prison before being paroled on December 31, 2007.)

1980 - The Persian Gulf conflict between Iran and Iraq erupted into full-scale war.

1982 - The sitcom "Family Ties" premiered on NBC.

1989 - Singer-songwriter Irving Berlin died in New York City at age 101.

1993 - 47 people were killed when an Amtrak passenger train fell off a bridge and crashed into Big Bayou Canot near Mobile, Alabama. (A tugboat pilot lost in fog pushed a barge into the railroad bridge, knocking the tracks 38 inches out of line just minutes before the train arrived.)

1995 - Time Warner struck a $7.5 billion deal to buy Turner Broadcasting System Inc.

2004 - "Lost" premiered on ABC.

2005 - John Roberts' nomination as chief justice cleared the Senate Judiciary Committee on a 13-5 vote.

2008 - The U.S. Mint unveiled the first changes to the penny in 50 years, with Abraham Lincoln's portrait still on the front, but new designs replacing the Lincoln Memorial on the back.

1911 - Cy Young, at age 44, wins his 511th and final baseball game.

1912 - Eddie Collins steals six bases in a game, for second time in 11 days.

1925 - New York Yankees' Ben Paschal hits two inside-the-park homers.

1927 - Gene Tunney successfully defended his heavyweight boxing title against Jack Dempsey in the "long count" fight in Chicago.

1934 - The NHL approved a new rule that allowed the awarding of penalty shots.

1945 - Stan Musial gets five hits off five pitchers on five consecutive pitches.

1956 - Pete Elliott begins his duties as Nebraska football coach with a 34-6 win over South Dakota to open the season.

1962 - Bob Devaney makes his debut as football coach at Nebraska, leading the Huskers to a 53-0 shutout of South Dakota to open the season.


1968 - Cesar Tovar became the second major league baseball player to play all nine positions in one game.

1969 - Willie Mays of the San Francisco Giants hit his 600th career home run during a game in San Diego.

1969 - San Francisco Giants' outfielder Bobby Bonds establishes a Major League of Baseball record as he strikeouts for the 176th time this season.

1973 - #2 Nebraska defeated #14 North Carolina State 31-14.

1975 - World Football League folds.

1979 - #7 Nebraska defeats Iowa 24-21.

1984 - #1 Nebraska defeated UCLA 42-3.


1985 - Michael Spinks beats Larry Holmes to become Heavyweight Boxing Champ. First time a light heavyweight defeats the reigning heavyweight champion.

1986 - Los Angeles Dodgers' Fernando Valenzuela is first Mexican to win 20 games.

1990 - Andre Dawson steals his 300th base and is only player other than Willie Mays to have 300 home runs, 300 steals and 2,000 hits.

1990 - #8 Nebraska defeated Minnesota 56-0.

2004 - CBS-owned television stations are fined a total of $550,000 by the FCC for showing Janet Jackson's exposed right breast during the football Super Bowl halftime show.

2006 - Barry Bonds (San Francisco Giants) tied Hank Aaron's National League home run record when he hit is 733rd.

2007 - #24 Nebraska defeated Ball State 41-40.

2012 - #25 Nebraska defeated Idaho State 73-7.
