1792 - The French National Convention voted to abolish the monarchy.

1897 - The New York Sun published its famous editorial, "Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus."

1931 - Britain went off the gold standard.

1937 - "The Hobbit" by J.R.R. Tolkein was published.

1938 - A hurricane struck New York and New England with extensive damage and more than 600 deaths.

1949 - The People's Republic of China was proclaimed.

1957 - "Perry Mason" starring Raymond Burr, premiered on CBS.

1964 - Malta gained its independence from Britain.

1977 - After weeks of controversy over past business and banking practices, President Jimmy Carter's embattled budget director, Bert Lance, resigned.

1981 - Belize gained independence from Britain.

1983 - Interior Secretary James G. Watt described a special advisory panel as consisting of "a black....a woman, two Jews and a cripple." Watt later apologized and resigned.

1989 - Hurricane Hugo crashed into Charleston, South Carolina (the storm was blamed for 56 deaths in the Caribbean and 29 in the United States).

1996 - The Virginia Military Institute voted to admit women.

1996 - John F. Kennedy Jr. married Carolyn Bessette.

1998 - President Bill Clinton's videotaped grand jury testimony in the Monica Lewinsky scandal was publicly broadcast, showing him answering one question from prosecutors by saying, "It depends on what the meaning of 'is' is."

2001 - Congress approved $15 billion in aid to help an airline industry reeling from the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

2004 - The album "American Idiot" by Green Day was released.

2008 - "Mad Men" became the first basic-cable show to win a top series Emmy award.

1901 - Nebraska defeats Lincoln High 22-0 in an exhibition game to open the season.

1906 - New York Yankees' first baseman Hal Chase's 22 put-outs ties record.

1957 - Bill Jennings debuts as Nebraska's football coach. His Huskers fall to Washington State 34-12 to open the season.

1963 - Nebraska defeated South Dakota State 58-7 to open the season.

1968 - #14 Nebraska defeated Utah 31-0.


1970 - "NFL Monday Night Football" premiered on ABC. The debut game saw the Cleveland Browns defeat the visiting New York Jets 31-21.

1971 - The American League approved the move of the Washington Senators to Arlington, Texas to become the Texas Rangers.

1974 - Wisconsin upset #4 Nebraska 21-20.

1980 - Los Angeles Rams' Johnnie Johnson scores a 99-yard interception.

1980 - Richard Todd of the New York Jets completes 42 passes in a game (NFL record).

1981 - Steve Carlton strikes out National League record 3,118th (Andre Dawson).

1982 - NFL players began a 57-day strike.

1985 - #18 Nebraska defeated Illinois 52-25.

1986 - Miami Dolphins' Dan Marino passes for six touchdowns versus New York Jets (51-45). The two teams set a record with a combined 884 passing yards.

1987 - NFL players called a strike, mainly over the issue of free agency. (The 24-day walkout prompted football owners to hire replacement players.)

1990 - Faye Vincent turns down Chicago White Sox bid to reinstate Minnie Minoso, 68, (so he can play in six decades) because it is a publicity stunt.

1990 - Oakland Athletics' Bob Welch becomes the first 25-game winner in ten years.

1990 - Pittsburgh Pirates' player Bobby Bond is second to hit 30 home runs and steal 50 bases in a season.

1991 - #4 Washington defeated #9 Nebraska 36-21.

1996 - #17 Arizona State upset #1 Nebraska 19-0, snapping a 26-game winning streak.


1998 - Olympic gold medal winning track star Florence Griffith Joyner died in her sleep at age 38 after suffering an epilectic seizure.

2001 - Sports return to New York for the first time since the terrorist attacks with the New York Mets/Atlanta Braves game at Shea Stadium. Mike Piazza hits a two-run home run in the 8th inning off Steve Karsay to win the game 3-2.

2008 - The New York Yankees played their last game at Yankee Stadium. The new Yankee Stadium opened across the street in 2009.

2008 - The United States claims the 2008 Ryder Cup golf trophy with a 16.5-11.5 victory over Europe.

2013 - Nebraska defeated South Dakota State 59-20.
