1914 - During World War I, the First Battle of the Marne ended in an Allied victory over Germany.

1938 - In a speech in Nuremberg, Adolf Hitler demanded self-determination for the Sudeten Germans in Czechoslovakia.

1943 - German paratroopers rescued former Italian dictator Benito Mussolini from the hotel where he was being held prisoner by his own government.

1944 - U.S. army troops entered Germany for the first time during World War II, near Trier.

2008 - A commuter train engineer ran a red light while text messaging on his cell phone and struck a freight train head-on in Los Angeles, killing himself and 24 other people.

1947 - Ralph Kiner of the Pittsburgh Pirates hits a record 8th home run in a four-game span.

1962 - Tom Cheney of the Washington Senators strikes out a record 21 batters in a 16-inning game against the Baltimore Orioles.

1970 - #9 Nebraska defeated Wake Forest 36-12 to open the season.

1976 - The Seattle Seahawks play their first regular season game in franchise history, a 30-24 loss to the St. Louis Cardinals.

1976 - Minnie Minoso of the Chicago White Sox hits a single at age 53.

1979 - Carl Yastrzemski of the Boston Red Sox records his 3,000th hit. He was the first player in American League history with 3,000 hits and 400 home runs.

1981 - #7 Nebraska was upset on the road by Iowa 10-7 to begin the season.

1984 - Dwight Gooden of the New York Mets sets a major league record for strikeouts by a rookie with 251.

1984 - Michael Jordan signs a seven-year contract to play basketball for the Chicago Bulls.

1987 - #2 Nebraska defeated #3 UCLA 42-33.

1987 - Vince Coleman steals his 100th base for the third straight season.

1988 - The first regular season NFL game in Arizona is held, with the Phoenix Cardinals losing to the Dallas Cowboys.

2002 - A judge announced that a jury would have to decide who would get the ball that Barry Bonds hit for his record 73rd home run. The ownership of the ball, with an estimated value of $1 million, was being disputed between two men that had been in the bleachers.
