1877 - Chief Joseph surrendered to the U.S. Army.

1892 - The Dalton Gang, notorious for its train robberies, was practically wiped out while attempting to rob a pair of banks in Coffeyville, Kansas.

1910 - King Manuel II was overthrown in a revolution and Portugal became a republic.

1947 - In the first televised White House address, President Harry Truman urged Americans to refrain from eating meat on Tuesdays and poultry on Sundays to help starving people in other countries.

1953 - Earl Warren was sworn in as the 14th Chief Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court.

1958 - Racially desegregated Clinton High School in Clinton, Tennessee, was nearly leveled by an early morning bombing.

1962 - The Beatles released their first hit, "Love Me Do," in Britain.

1986 - Nicaraguan Sandinista government soldiers shot down a cargo plane carrying weapons and ammunition bound for Contra rebels; the event exposed a web of illegal arms shipments, leading to the Iran-Contra Scandal.

1989 - A jury in Charlotte, North Carolina, convicted evangelist Jim Bakker of using his television show to defraud followers. Initially sentenced to 45 years in prison, Bakker was freed in December 1994 after serving 4 1/2 years.

1990 - Cincinnati's Contemporary Arts Center and its director were acquitted of obscenity charges resulting from an exhibit of Robert Mapplethorpe's photographs.

2001 - Tabloid photo editor Robert Stevens died from inhaled anthrax, the first of a series of anthrax cases in Florida, New York, New Jersey and Washington.

2011 - Steve Jobs, the Apple founder and former chief executive who invented and master-marketed ever-sleeker gadgets that transformed everyday technology, died in Palo Alto, California, at age 56.

2018 - A jury in Chicago convicted white police officer Jason Van Dyke of second-degree murder in the 2014 shooting of Black teenager Laquan McDonald.

2020 - President Donald Trump made a dramatic return to the White House after leaving the military hospital where he was being treated for COVID-19.

1908 - Chicago White Sox pitcher Ed Walsh earns his 40th win of the year.

1921 - The World Series was broadcast on radio for the first time.

1922 - The New York Yankees and New York Giants play out a controversial 3-3 tie in 10 innings in Game 2 of the World Series. (The Giants would go on to win the series 4-0-1.)

1932 - The Detroit Falcons hockey franchise changes its name to Red Wings.

1942 - The St. Louis Cardinals defeat the New York Yankees in six games to win the World Series.

1991 - Fresno State ties an NCAA record scoring 49 points in a quarter (the second quarter) as they route New Mexico 94-17.

2001 - Barry Bonds of the San Francisco Giants hit his 71st and 72nd home runs of the year, breaking Mark McGwire's major league record of 70 set in 1998.

2001 - MLB's Atlanta Braves become first pro sports team to win 10 straight division titles after mauling the Marlins, 20-3 to clinch the NL East title; NBA's Boston Celtics (1957-65) & LA Lakers (1982-90) both won 9 in a row.

2003 - Chicago Cubs win their first MLB postseason series since the 1908 World Series with 5-1 win v Atlanta Braves in Game 5 NLDS at Turner Field.

2003 - Kansas City wide receiver Dante Hall scores on game winning 93-yard punt return in Chiefs 24-23 victory v Denver Broncos at Arrowhead Stadium; returns for score in an NFL-record 4th straight game.

2004 - Scottie Pippen of the Chicago Bulls announces his retirement from basketball.

2007 - After years of angry denials, triple gold medal winning American sprinter Marion Jones admits she used steroids 2000-01; pleads guilty to lying to federal investigators; announces retirement in tearful apology; medals returned to USOC.
