1787 - The first of the Federalist Papers, a series of essays calling for ratification of the U.S. Constitution, was published in a New York newspaper.

1858 - Theodore Roosevelt, the 26th president of the United States, was born in New York City.

1880 - Theodore Roosevelt married Alice Lee.

1904 - The first rapid transit subway, the IRT, opened in New York City.

1938 - Du Pont announced that it would name its new synthetic yard "nylon".

1947 - "You Bet Your Life", starring Groucho Marx, premiered on ABC Radio.

1962 - During the Cuban Missile Crisis, a U-2 reconnaissance aircraft was shot down while flying over Cuba, killing the pilot, U.S. Air Force Maj. Rudolf Anderson Jr.

1978 - Egyptian President Anwar Sadat and Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin won the Nobel Peace Prize.

2005 - Surgeons in France performed the world's first partial face transplant on a woman who was mauled by a dog.

2008 - Sen. Ted Stevens (R-Alaska) was convicted of seven corruption charges for lying about free home renovations and other gifts from a wealthy oil contractor. (A judge later dismissed the case, saying prosecutors had withheld evidence.)

1995 - The contract that finalized the Cleveland Browns' move to Baltimore was signed in secret.

1996 - Bud Adams, the owner of the Houston Oilers, announced that he would allow his team to play one final season in Houston before moving the team to Nashville, Tennessee.

1999 - The New York Yankees swept the Atlanta Braves to win a second consecutive World Series.

2001 - #3 Nebraska defeats #2 Oklahoma 20-10. ESPN College GameDay originated from Lincoln for this game.

2002 - Dallas Cowboys running back Emmitt Smith broke the NFL career rushing record of 16,726 held by Walter Payton.

2002 - The Anaheim Angels defeat the San Francisco Giants in seven games to win the World Series.

2003 - The Monday Night Football game between the San Diego Chargers and Miami Dolphins was moved from San Diego to Tempe, Arizona due to wild fires in the San Diego area.

2004 - The Boston Red Sox swept the St. Louis Cardinals to win their first World Series since 1918. With the win, Curt Schilling became the first starting pitcher to win a World Series with three different teams.

2004 - Barry Bonds' 700th home run ball is sold on an online auction for $804,129.

2006 - The St. Louis Cardinals defeated the heavily-favored Detroit Tigers in five games to win the World Series. The Cardinals, who lost ten of their last 14 regular season games, won less games than any World Series champion in history.

2007 - #17 Texas defeats Nebraska 28-25.
