1774 - The First Continental Congress adjourned in Philadelphia.

1825 - The Erie Canal, connecting Lake Erie to the Hudson River, opened.

1861 - The legendary Pony Express officially ceased operations, giving way to the transcontinental telegraph. (The last run of the Pony Express was completed the following month.)

1881 - Wyatt Earp, his two brothers, and Doc Holliday were involved in the gunfight at the O.K. Corral in Tombstone, Arizona.

1975 - Anwar Sadat became the first Egyptian president to pay an official visit to the United States.

1979 - South Korean president Park Chung Hee was killed by the head of the Korean Central Intelligence Agency.

1982 - The medical drama “St. Elsewhere,” which would make stars of Denzel Washington, Mark Harmon and others, premiered on NBC.

1984 - “Baby Fae,” a newborn with a severe heart defect, was given the heart of a baboon in an experimental transplant in Loma Linda, California. (She lived 21 days with the animal heart.)

1994 - Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin of Israel and Prime Minister Abdel Salam Majali of Jordan signed a peace treaty in a ceremony attended by President Bill Clinton.

2001 - President George W. Bush signed the USA Patriot Act, giving authorities unprecedented ability to search, seize, detain or eavesdrop in their pursuit of possible terrorists.

2002 - Russian government forces stormed the Moscow theater held by Chechen rebels; more than 100 hostages were killed.

2010 - Iran began loading fuel into the core of its first nuclear power plant.

2012 - After leaving nearly five dozen people dead in the Caribbean, Hurricane Sandy headed toward the eastern United States, with forecasters warning that it would merge with two winter weather systems to create a mega-storm.

2018 - Federal authorities captured a Florida man with a criminal history and accused him of sending at least 13 mail bombs to prominent Democrats. (Cesar Sayoc was sentenced to 20 years in prison by a judge who concluded that the bombs purposely were not designed to explode.)

2020 - Amy Coney Barrett was confirmed to the Supreme Court by a deeply divided Senate, with Republicans overpowering Democrats to install President Donald Trump’s nominee days before the election and secure a likely conservative court majority for years to come.

2021 - Satirist Mort Sahl, who helped revolutionize stand-up comedy during the Cold War with his running commentary on politicians and current events, died at his California home at the age of 94.

1911 - The Philadelphia Athletics defeat the New York Giants in six games to win the World Series.

1960 - The American League approves the move of the Washington Senators to become the Minnesota Twins; also approves two new expansion franchises -- the Los Angeles Angels and a new Washington Senators team (which would become the Texas Rangers in 1972).

1980 - The St. Louis Cardinals record an NFL record 12 sacks against the Baltimore Colts.

1982 - Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Steve Carlton becomes the first to win the Cy Young Award four times.

1985 - The Montreal Canadiens retire Doug Harvey's #2.

1990 - Wayne Gretzky became the first NHL player to reach 2,000 points.

1995 - Mario Lemieux (Pittsburgh Penguins) scored his 500th National Hockey League (NHL) career goal against the New York Islanders in his 605th game. He became the second-fastest player to attain the plateau. Wayne Gretzky had reached 500 goals by his 575th NHL game.

1996 - The New York Yankees defeat the Atlanta Braves in six games to win the World Series.

1997 - The Florida Marlins defeat the Cleveland Indians in seven games to win the World Series.

2000 - The New York Yankees became the first team in more than a quarter-century to win three straight World Series championships, beating the New York Mets in game five of their “Subway Series.”

2005 - The Chicago White Sox sweep the Houston Astros to win their first World Series championship in 88 years.

2018 - In the longest-ever World Series game in both innings and time, the Los Angeles Dodgers defeat the Boston Red Sox 3-2 in 18 innings, over 7 hours, 20 minutes, in Game 3.
