1066 - The Normans, under William the Conqueror, defeated the English at the Battle of Hastings.

1890 - Dwight D. Eisenhower, the 34th president of the United States, was born in Denison, Texas.

1912 - Former President Theodore Roosevelt, campaigning for the White House as the Progressive ("Bull Moose") candidate, went ahead with a speech in Milwaukee after being shot and wounded in the chest by New York saloonkeeper John Schrank, declaring, "It takes more than one bullet to kill a bull moose."

1933 - Nazi Germany withdrew from the Geneva disarmament conference and the League of Nations.

1939 - A German U-boat torpedoed and sank the HMS Royal Oak, a British battleship anchored at Scapa Flow in Scotland's Orkney Islands; 833 of the more than 1,200 men aboard were killed.

1944 - German Field Marshal Erwin Rommel committed suicide rather than face execution for allegedly conspiring against Adolf Hitler.

1947 - Air Force Capt. Charles "Chuck" Yeager became the first person to travel faster than the speed of sound.

1960 - Democratic presidential candidate John F. Kennedy suggested the creation of the Peace Corps during a talk at the University of Michigan.

1964 - Martin Luther King Jr. was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his work in civil rights.

1968 - The first live telecast from a staffed U.S. spacecraft took place from Apollo 7.

1977 - Singer Bing Crosby died at age 73.

1987 - A 58-hour drama began in Midland, Texas, as 18-month-old Jessica McClure slid 22 feet down an abandoned well at a private day care center.

2006 - The U.N. Security Council voted unanimously to impose punishing sanctions on North Korea for carrying out a nuclear test.

1905 - The New York Giants defeated the Philadelphia Athletics in five games to win the World Series.

1905 - Nebraska defeated Knox 16-0.

1906 - The Chicago White Sox defeated the Chicago Cubs in six games to win the World Series, the first series win by the American League.

1908 - The Chicago Cubs defeated the Detroit Tigers in five games to win the World Series.

1910 - Hall of Fame UCLA basketball coach John Wooden was born near Martinsville, Indiana.

1911 - Nebraska defeated Kansas State 59-0.

1916 - Nebraska defeated Kansas State 14-0.


1929 - The Philadelphia Athletics defeated the Chicago Cubs in five games to win the World Series.

1933 - Nebraska defeated Iowa State 20-0.

1939 - Nebraska defeated Iowa State 10-7.

1944 - #19 Indiana defeated Nebraska 54-0.


1945 - The Chicago Cardinals end an NFL record 29 game losing streak after beating the Chicago Bears.

1950 - Colorado defeated Nebraska 28-19.

1961 - Syracuse defeated Nebraska 28-6.


1962 - George Blanda of the Houston Oilers throws six touchdown passes against the Los Angeles Rams.

1967 - Kansas upset #8 Nebraska 10-0.

1972 - #6 Nebraska defeated Missouri 62-0.

1978 - #8 Nebraska defeated Kansas State 48-14.


1979 - Hockey Hall of Famer Wayne Gretzky of the Edmonton Oilers scored the first of his record 894 career goals in a home game against the Vancouver Canucks.

1984 - The Detroit Tigers defeated the San Diego Padres in five games to win the World Series.

1985 - The New York Jets retire Joe Namath's #12.

1986 - The International Olympic Committee votes to stagger the Summer and Winter Olympic Games every two years.

1989 - #4 Nebraska defeated Missouri 50-7.

1990 - Joe Montana of the San Francisco 49ers throws six touchdown passes against the Atlanta Falcons.

1995 - #2 Nebraska defeated Missouri 57-0.

2000 - Neil Parry had his right leg severely broken while playing on kickoff coverage during a game at UTEP. Nine days later his lower leg was amputated. Three years later he returned to football on one play with a prosthetic leg.

2000 - #1 Nebraska defeated Texas Tech 56-3.

2006 - #21 Nebraska defeated Kansas State 21-3.
