1620 - Peregrine White was born aboard the Mayflower in Massachusetts Bay; he was the first child born of English parents in present-day New England.

1789 - New Jersey became the first state to ratify the Bill of Rights.

1910 - Revolution broke out in Mexico.

1917 - Robert C. Byrd, the longest-serving senator in U.S. history, was born Cornelius Calvin Sale Jr. in North Wilkesboro, North Carolina.

1925 - Robert F. Kennedy was born in Brookline, Massachusetts.

1945 - Twenty-four Nazi leaders went on trial before an international war crimes tribunal in Nuremberg, Germany. (Almost a year later 12 were sentenced to death, seven received sentences ranging from 10 years to life in prison and three were acquitted.)

1977 - Egyptian President Anwar Sadat became the first Arab leader to address Israel's parliament.

1995 - Princess Diana admitted during an interview broadcast on BBC TV that she had been unfaithful to Prince Charles.

2003 - Singer Michael Jackson was booked on suspicion of child molestation in Santa Barbara, California. (He was later acquitted).

1915 - Nebraska defeated Iowa 52-7 to end the season with a perfect 8-0-0 record and a Missouri Valley Conference championship (4-0-0).

1920 - Nebraska defeated Michigan State 35-7.

1926 - Nebraska defeated New York University 15-7.

1937 - #11 Nebraska defeated Iowa 28-0.


1942 - The NHL abolishes regular season overtime until World War II is over.

1943 - Iowa defeated Nebraska 33-13.

1948 - Missouri defeated Nebraska 33-6.

1954 - #3 Oklahoma defeated Nebraska 55-7.


1962 - Mickey Mantle is named American League MVP for the third time.

1966 - The Dallas Cowboys sack Pittsburgh Steelers quarterbacks a record 12 times.

1969 - Pele scores his 1,000th soccer goal.

1977 - Walter Payton of the Chicago Bears rushes for an NFL single game record 275 yards.

1982 - The University of California executes "The Play" in a college football game against Stanford, completing a wacky 57-yard kickoff return that included five laterals, Kevin Moen runs through Stanford band members who had prematurely come onto the field. His touchdown stood and Cal won the game 25-20.

1983 - Butch Woolfolk of the New York Giants sets an NFL record with 43 rushing attempts.

1985 - Don Mattingly of the New York Yankees is named American League MVP.

1997 - A.C. Green played in his 907th consecutive game for the Dallas Mavericks.

2010 - #18 Texas A&M defeated #9 Nebraska 9-6.
