1558 - Queen Elizabeth I of England ascended to the throne upon the death of her half-sister, Queen Mary, beginning a 44-year reign.

1800 - Congress met in Washington, D.C. for the first time.

1869 - The Suez Canal opened in Egypt.

1934 - Lyndon B. Johnson married Claudia Alta Taylor, better known as "Lady Bird."

1962 - Dulles International Airport in Washington, D.C., was dedicated.

1970 - The Soviet Union landed an unmanned, remote-controlled vehicle on the moon.

1973 - President Nixon told an Associated Press managing editors meeting in Orlando, Fla., that ``people have got to know whether or not their president is a crook. Well, I'm not a crook.''

1989 - The beginning of the "Velvet Revolution" took place, which led to the downfall of communism in Czechoslovakia.

2003 - Actor Arnold Schwarzenegger was sworn in as governor of California.

2003 - John Allen Muhammad was convicted of two counts of capital murder in the Washington-area sniper shootings. (He was later sentenced to death and executed.)

2010 - A hand-count of votes affirmed the re-election of U.S. Sen. Lisa Murkowski, R-Alaska, the first Senate candidate in over 50 years to win a write-in campaign.

2010 - The first Guantanamo detainee to face civilian trial, Ahmed Ghailani, was convicted by federal jury in New York on one charge of conspiracy related to 1998 bombings of U.S. embassies in Kenya and Ghailani's native Tanzania.

1894 - Nebraska defeated Kansas 12-6.

1898 - Nebraska defeated Colorado 23-10.

1900 - Nebraska defeated Kansas 12-0.

1917 - Nebraska defeated Kansas 13-3.

1923 - Nebraska defeated Iowa State 26-14.


1926 - NHL's Chicago Black Hawks play their first game, beat Toronto Saint Patricks 4-1.

1928 - Nebraska and Pittsburgh played to a 0-0 tie.

1934 - Nebraska defeated Kansas 3-0.


1940 - The Green Bay Packers become the first NFL team to travel by plane.

1945 - Nebraska defeated South Dakota 53-0.

1951 - Colorado defeated Nebraska 36-14.

1956 - Baylor defeated Nebraska 26-7.


1956 - Fullback Jim Brown, Syracuse, scores 43 points (NCAA record) versus Colgate.

1962 - Nebraska defeated Oklahoma State 14-0.

1965 - William D. Eckert is selected by the owners to become US Major League Baseball's fourth commissioner. The retired Air Force Lieutenant General succeeds Ford Frick.

1968 - NBC switched its television broadcast from the final seconds of a game between the Oakland Raiders and New York Jets to show the movie "Heidi". In the 42 seconds that did not air, the Raiders scored two touchdowns to come from behind to defeat the Jets 43-32, which outraged viewers who had missed the ending. This led to the institution of "program delay" by the TV networks until a game is finished.

1973 - #10 Nebraska defeated Kansas State 50-21.

1979 - #3 Nebraska defeated Iowa State 34-3.


1981 - NBA New York Knicks' Bill Cartwright ties record of 19 of 19 free throws.

1982 - The NFL reduced its 16-game season to nine as a result of a 57-day players' strike.

1984 - #4 Oklahoma upset #1 Nebraska 17-7. The Huskers finished the regular season as co-Big 8 champions.

1985 - The New York Jets rout the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 62-28.

1991 - Detroit Lions player Mike Utley is paralyzed in a game versus Los Angeles Rams.

1997 - Mario Lemieux was voted into the NHL Hall of Fame.

2003 - Barry Bonds (San Francisco Giants) became the first major league baseball player to receive six National League MVP awards.

2012 - #16 Nebraska defeated Minnesota 38-14.
