1927 - Leon Trotsky was expelled from the Communist Party and Joseph Stalin became ruler of the Soviet Union.

1929 - Grace Kelly -- the future movie star and Princess of Monaco -- was born in Philadelphia.

1942 - The World War II Battle of Guadalcanal begins.

1948 - Former Japanese premier Hideki Tojo and several other World War II Japanese leaders were sentenced to death by a war crimes tribunal.

1954 - Ellis Island stopped serving as the chief immigration station for the United States. More than 20 million immigrants were processed through Ellis Island in its 62 years of operation.

1970 - A cyclone and tidal wave struck East Pakistan, killing more than 200,000 people.

1975 - Supreme Court Justice William O. Douglas retired because of failing health, ending a record 36-year term on the bench.

1977 - New Orleans elected its first Black mayor, Ernest "Dutch" Morial, the winner of a runoff.

1981 - The space shuttle Columbia was launched for the second time, becoming the first space vehicle to be used more than once.

1982 - Yuri V. Andropov was elected to succeed the late Leonid I. Brezhnev as general secretary of the Soviet Union's Communist Party Central Committee.

1985 - Xavier Suarez was elected Miami's first Cuban-American mayor.

1987 - The American Medical Association issued a policy statement saying it was unethical for a doctor to refuse to treat someone solely because that person had AIDS or was HIV-positive.

1990 - Akihito becomes emperor of Japan.

1996 - A Saudi Boeing 747 jetliner collided shortly after takeoff from New Delhi, India with a Kazak Ilyushin-76 cargo plane, killing 349 people.

1997 - Ramzi Yousef, the man behind the 1993 World Trade Center bombing, was convicted in New York City.

1999 - President Bill Clinton signed a sweeping measure knocking down Depression-era barriers and allowing banks, investment firms and insurance companies to sell each other's products.

2001 - American Airlines Flight 587, an Airbus A300 headed to the Dominican Republic, crashed after takeoff from John F. Kennedy International Airport, killing all 260 people on board and five people on the ground.

2004 - A jury convicted Scott Peterson of murdering his pregnant wife, Laci, and dumping her body in San Francisco Bay. (Peterson was later sentenced to death.)

2009 - Army psychiatrist Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan was charged with 13 counts of premeditated murder in the Fort Hood, Texas massacre. (Hasan was later convicted and sentenced to death.)

2010 - President Barack Obama arrived in Japan from South Korea to attend a regional economic summit; it was the fourth and final stop on the president's 10-day tour of Asia.

2010 - The Supreme Court allowed the Pentagon to continue preventing openly gay people from serving in the military while a federal appeals court reviewed the "don't ask, don't tell" policy. (The policy was rescinded in 2011.)

2011 - Italian Premier Silvio Berlusconi resigned.

2011 - The Arab League voted to suspend Syria over the country's bloody crackdown on protesters.

2015 - President Barack Obama awarded the Medal of Honor to Florent Groberg, an Army captain who shoved a suicide bomber to the ground and away from his security detail in Afghanistan. (Four people were killed in the attack; Groberg survived with severe injuries.)

2019 - The Supreme Court said a survivor of the Newtown, Connecticut school shooting and relatives of the victims could pursue their lawsuit against Remington Arms, the maker of the rifle that was used to kill 26 people.

2019 - Disney's new streaming service, Disney+, made its launch and suffered some technical difficulties in the early hours; Disney said consumer demand exceeded expectations.

2019 - Venice, Italy saw its worst flooding in more than 50 years, with the water reaching 6.14 feet above average sea level; damage was estimated in the hundreds of millions of dollars.

2019 - Former President Jimmy Carter underwent surgery in Atlanta to relieve pressure on his brain from bleeding that was linked to recent falls.

1892 - William "Pudge" Heffelfinger became the first professional football player when he was paid a $500 bonus for helping the Allegheny Athletic Association beat the Pittsburgh Athletic Club.

1892 - Kansas defeats Nebraska 12-0.

1896 - Butte defeats Nebraska 20-6.

1898 - Drake defeats Nebraska 6-5.

1904 - Haskell defeats Nebraska 14-6.

1910 - Nebraska defeats Iowa State 24-0.


1920 - Judge Kenesaw Mountain Landis was elected the first commissioner of Major League Baseball.

1921 - Nebraska defeats Kansas 28-0.

1927 - Pittsburgh defeats Nebraska 21-13.

1932 - Nebraska and Pittsburgh play to a 0-0 tie.

1938 - #3 Pittsburgh defeats Nebraska 19-0.

1949 - Nebraska defeats Iowa State 7-0.


1953 - The NFL policy of blacking out home games was upheld by Judge Allan K. Grim of the U.S. District Court in Philadelphia.

1955 - Nebraska defeats Colorado 37-20.

1960 - Oklahoma State defeats Nebraska 7-6.

1966 - #4 Nebraska defeats Oklahoma State 21-6.


1967 - The Detroit Lions set an NFL record when they fumbled the ball 10 times in a game.

1970 - After 11 attempts, the Cleveland Cavaliers record their first NBA win in franchise history, a 105-103 victory over the Portland Trail Blazers.

1972 - Don Shula of the Miami Dolphins became the first NFL head coach to win 100 regular season games after only 10 seasons.

1977 - #12 Nebraska defeats Kansas 52-7.

1983 - #1 Nebraska defeats Kansas 67-13.

1988 - #7 Nebraska defeats #19 Colorado 7-0.

1994 - #1 Nebraska defeats Iowa State 28-12.


1994 - Olympic track and field gold medalist Wilma Rudolph died in Brentwood, Tennessee at age 54.

1995 - Dan Marino of the Miami Dolphins breaks Fran Tarkenton's NFL career passing yardage record of 47,003.

1995 - Jeff Gordon wins NASCAR's Sprint Cup.

2005 - Nebraska defeats Kansas State 27-25.

2011 - #19 Nebraska defeats #12 Penn State 17-14.


2012 - Joe Sakic, Mats Sundin, Pavel Bure and Adam Oates are inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame.

2016 - #21 Nebraska defeats Minnesota 24-17.

2019 - Former Houston Astros pitcher Mike Fiers reveals that the team secretly stole signs via camera from visiting teams from 2015 through 2017 and that communications between opposing pitchers and catchers were intercepted and relayed to Astros batters.
