1527 - Unpaid troops loyal to Holy Roman Emperor Charles V attacked Rome, forcing Pope Clement VII to flee to safety; some scholars mark the ensuing sack of the city as the end of the Renaissance in Italy.

1757 - During the Seven Years' War, Prussian troops under King Frederick II forced Austrian soldiers to retreat in the Battle of Prague. (Prussia then lay siege to Prague, but ultimately failed to take the city.)

1840 - A tornado that touched down in eastern Louisiana and crossed the Mississippi River into Natchez, Mississippi, killed 317 people, most of them on boats in the river.

1856 - Sigmund Freud, the father of psychoanalysis, was born in Freiberg, Moravia (present-day Czech Republic).

1882 - Congress passed the Chinese Exclusion Act over President Chester A. Arthur's veto, which barred Chinese immigrants from the United States for 10 years.

1889 - The Universal Exposition opened in Paris, marking the completion and dedication of the Eiffel Tower.

1910 - Britain's King Edward VII died; he was succeeded by George V.

1935 - The Works Progress Administration began operating under an executive order signed by President Franklin D. Roosevelt.

1937 - The German airship Hindenburg blew up and burst into flames at Lakehurst, New Jersey.

1941 - Dictator Joseph Stalin became premier of Russia.

1942 - Some 15,000 Americans and Filipinos on Corregidor surrendered to the Japanese during World War II.

1960 - Britain's Princess Margaret married Anthony Armstrong Jones, a commoner, at Westminster Abbey. (They divorced in 1978.)

1975 - An F4 tornado struck the Omaha metro area, killing three and injuring over 130.

1992 - Former Soviet leader Mikhail S. Gorbachev delivered a speech at Westminster College in Fulton, Missouri, where Winston Churchill had spoken of the "Iron Curtain"; Gorbachev said the world was still divided, between North and South, rich and poor.

1994 - The Chunnel between England and France officially opened.

1999 - Scotland elected its first separate parliament for the first time in over 300 years.

2001 - Pope John Paul II, during a trip to Syria, became the first pope to enter a mosque.

2002 - "Spider-Man" became the first movie to make more than $100 million in its opening weekend.

2004 - The final episode of "Friends" aired on NBC.

2007 - Conservative Nicolas Sarkozy was elected president France.

2013 - Kidnap-rape victims Amanda Berry, Gina DeJesus and Michelle Knight, who went missing separately about a decade earlier while in their teens or early 20s, were rescued from a house just south of downtown Cleveland. (Their captor, Ariel Castro, hanged himself in prison in September 2013 at the beginning of a life sentence plus 1,000 years.)

1915 - Babe Ruth of the Boston Red Sox hit the first of what would be his major league record 714 career home runs in a 4-3 win over the New York Yankees at the Polo Grounds.

1946 - The New York Yankees became the first major league baseball team to travel by plane.

1954 - British athlete Roger Bannister became the first person to run a mile in under four minutes (3:59.4).

1968 - San Francisco Giants' baseball player Lindy McDaniel sets a National League record playing his 225th consecutive game without committing an error. The streak includes 108 chances handled successfully since June 16, 1964.

1973 - The New England Whalers defeated the Winnipeg Jets to win the first World Hockey Association (WHA) championship.

1982 - Seattle Mariners' Gaylord Perry becomes 15th pitcher to win 300 games.

1997 - The NHL's Hartford Whalers announce their move and name change to the Carolina Hurricanes.

1997 - Rick Pitino is named head coach of the Boston Celtics.
