1533 - The Archbishop of Canterbury, Thomas Cranmer, declared the marriage of England's King Henry VIII to Anne Boleyn valid.

1863 - Robert Gould Shaw, leading the first northern all-black regiment, leaves Boston for the Civil War.

1892 - The Sierra Club was organized in San Francisco.

1912 - The Senate Commerce Committee issued its report on the Titanic disaster that cited a "state of absolute unpreparedness," improperly tested safety equipment and an "indifference to danger" as some of the causes of an "unnecessary tragedy."

1929 - The first all-color, full-length talking picture, "On With the Show!", debuted.

1934 - The Dionne quintuplets were born in Ontario, Canada.

1937 - President Franklin D. Roosevelt pushed a button in Washington signaling that vehicular traffic could begin crossing the just-opened Golden Gate Bridge in California.

1937 - Neville Chamberlain became prime minister of Great Britain.

1937 - In Nazi Germany, Volkswagen was founded by the German Labour Front for the purpose of creating a "people's car."

1940 - Belgium surrendered to Nazi forces during World War II.

1977 - 165 people were killed when fire raced through the Beverly Hills Supper Club in Southgate, Kentucky. (Investigators cited faulty electrical wiring, fire safety code violations and overcrowding as reasons for the disaster.)

1984 - President Ronald Reagan led a state funeral at Arlington National Cemetery for an unidentified American soldier killed in the Vietnam War.

1987 - Mathias Rust, a 19-year-old pilot from West Germany, landed his private plane in Moscow's Red Square. He was arrested and sentenced to four years in a labor camp, but was released after just one.

1997 - Linda Finch completed Amelia Earhart's attempted around-the-world flight.

1998 - Pakistan staged nuclear tests in response to India's nuclear tests two weeks earlier.

1998 - Actor/comedian Phil Hartman of "Saturday Night Live" and "NewsRadio" fame was shot to death at his home in Encino, California by his wife, Brynn, who then killed herself.

2003 - President George W. Bush signed a $350 billion tax cut into law; the third largest tax cut in U.S. history.

2007 - Miss Japan Rita Mori was crowned Miss Universe 2007 at the pageant in Mexico City.

2016 - A 3-year-old boy fell into a gorilla enclosure at the Cincinnati Zoo; he was rescued by a team that shot to death a 400-pound gorilla named Harambe after the rescuers concluded that the boy's life was at stake, a decision which led to mourning and criticism around the globe.

1887 - Jim Thorpe, the "world's greatest athlete", was born in Oklahoma.

1951 - After going 0-for-12, Willie Mays connects for his first homerun (also his first major league hit).

1957 - Baseball owners voted to allow the Brooklyn Dodgers and New York Giants to move to Los Angeles and San Francisco, respectively.

1961 - Record 27 homeruns hit in seven American League games.

1962 - "Wide World of Sports" with Chris Schenkel premiered on CBS radio.

1968 - The American League announces it will be splitting into two divisions.

1968 - The National League announces a new franchise, the San Diego Padres.

1986 - Chicago White Sox player Joe Cowley sets record striking out first seven Texas Rangers he faces.

1991 - The Pittsburgh Penguins defeat the Minnesota North Stars in six games to win their first Stanley Cup.

2003 - Patrick Roy (Colorado Avalanche) announced his retirement from the NHL. He left his career as the NHL leader in victories (551) and games played (1,029). He was also the all-time leader in playoff victories, games played and shutouts.

2006 - Barry Bonds of the San Francisco Giants hits his 715th career home run, moving him past Babe Ruth into the No. 2 position on the all-time home run list.

2016 - New Orleans Pelicans guard Bryce Dejean-Jones was shot to death by an apartment resident after kicking down the door of what he mistakenly thought was his girlfriend's flat in Dallas.
