1643 - Louis XIV became King of France at age 4 after the death of his father, Louis XIII.

1787 - Delegates began gathering in Philadelphia for a convention to draw up the U.S. Constitution.

1796 - Edward Jenner administered the first smallpox vaccine to 8-year-old James Phipps.

1804 - The Lewis and Clark expedition set out from St. Louis to explore the lands acquired in the Louisiana Purchase.

1948 - British rule in Palestine came to an end as The Jewish National Council proclaimed the State of Israel. David Ben-Gurion made the announcement and became Israel's first prime minister. President Harry S. Truman immediately recognized and acknowledged the new nation. Within hours, Israel was under attack from Arab forces.

1955 - The Warsaw Pact was signed by the Soviet Union and seven other Communist bloc countries. (It dissolved in 1991.)

1973 - Skylab, the first American space station, was launched into orbit.

1998 - Singer Frank Sinatra died at age 82.

1998 - The final episode of "Seinfeld" aired on NBC.

2001 - The U.S. Supreme Court ruled that there is no exception in federal law for people to use marijuana to ease their pain from cancer, AIDS or other illnesses.

2007 - DaimlerChrysler announced it was selling almost all of Chrysler to a private equity firm for $7.4 billion, backing out of a troubled 1998 takeover.

2007 - The trial of suspected al-Qaeda operative Jose Padilla opened in Miami. (Padilla was later convicted of terrorism conspiracy and sentenced to 17 years in prison.)

2008 - The Interior Department declared the polar bear a threatened species because of the loss of Arctic sea ice.

2011 - Dominique Strauss-Kahn, head of the International Monetary Fund and potential candidate for president of France, was charged with sexually assaulting a Manhattan hotel maid. (He later resigned from the IMF; the charges against him were dropped.)

1904 - The Olympic Games were held in the United States for the first time, in St. Louis, Missouri.

1920 - Washington Senators pitcher Walter Johnson wins his 300th game.

1967 - Mickey Mantle of the New York Yankees hit his 500th career home run.

1977 - The Montreal Canadiens sweep the Boston Bruins to win the Stanley Cup.

1981 - The Boston Celtics defeat the Houston Rockets in six games to win the NBA championship.

1986 - Reggie Jackson hits his 537th career home run, moving past Mickey Mantle into sixth place on the all-time major league list.

1988 - Jose Oquendo of the St. Louis Cardinals becomes the first non-pitcher to get a decision in a baseball game after a 7-5 loss to the Atlanta Braves in 19 innings.

1989 - Kirby Puckett of the Minnesota Twins becomes the first major league player since 1948 to hit six consecutive doubles.

1997 - Baseball's Exec Council suspends New York Yankees owner George Steinbrenner.
