1568 - Mary Queen of Scots was defeated at the Battle of Langside and immediately fled to North England.

1607 - An English colony was settled at Jamestown in present-day Virginia.

1846 - The United States formally declared war on Mexico after several days of fighting.

1917 - Three peasant children near Fatima, Portugal, reported seeing a vision of the Virgin Mary; it was the first of six such apparitions that the children claimed to have witnessed.

1938 - Louis Armstrong and his orchestra recorded the New Orleans jazz classic, "When the Saints Go Marching In" on Decca Records.

1940 - Winston Churchill gave his first speech as British prime minister, saying: "I have nothing to offer but blood, toil, tears and sweat."

1958 - Vice President Richard Nixon's limousine was battered by rocks thrown by anti-U.S. demonstrators in Caracas, Venezuela.

1981 - Pope John Paul II was shot and wounded by Mehmet Ali Agca as he drove through a crowd in St. Peter's Square.

1985 - Philadelphia police dropped an explosive onto the headquarters of the radical group MOVE; 11 people died in the resulting fire along with 61 homes being destroyed.

1992 - The Falun Gong movement had its beginning as the sect's founder, Li Hongzhi, began publicly lecturing on his spiritual philosophy in the northeastern Chinese city of Changchun.

1994 - President Bill Clinton nominated federal appeals Judge Stephen G. Breyer to the U.S. Supreme Court to replace the retiring Harry A. Blackmun.

2002 - President George W. Bush announced that he and Russian President Vladimir Putin would sign a treaty to shrink their countries' nuclear arsenals by two-thirds.

2003 - The government unveiled a new version of the $20 bill - the first to be colorized in an effort to thwart counterfeiters.

2011 - Two suicide bombers attacked paramilitary police recruits heading home after months of training in northwest Pakistan, killing 87 people in what the Pakistan Taliban called revenge for the U.S. slaying of Osama bin Laden.

2016 - The Obama administration issued a directive requiring public schools to permit transgender students to use bathrooms and locker rooms consistent with their chosen gender identity.

2017 - Pope Francis, during a Mass in Fatima, Portugal, added two shepherd children to the roster of Catholic saints, honoring siblings Francisco and Jacinta Marto, who reported visions of the Virgin Mary 100 years earlier.

2020 - The Wisconsin Supreme Court struck down Gov. Tony Evers’ coronavirus stay-at-home order, ruling that his administration had overstepped its authority by extending the order for another month.

2021 - The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention eased mask-wearing guidance for fully vaccinated people, allowing them to stop wearing masks outdoors in crowds and in most indoor settings.

1905 - World heavyweight boxing champion James J. Jeffries retires undefeated after seven successful title defenses; he would return in 1910 to be beaten by Jack Johnson.

1911 - Fred Merkle (New York Giants) recorded six RBIs in an inning.

1953 - Willie Mays (New York Giants) and Darryl Spencer (New York Giants) each hit two homeruns and a triple in the same game.

1958 - Stan Musial became the 8th player in major league history to get 3,000 hits.

1967 - An octagon-shaped boxing ring is tested to see if it would help avoid corner injuries.

1973 - Tennis male chauvinist Bobby Riggs defeated Margaret Smith Court 6-2, 6-1 in front of a world-wide television audience. (He would lose to Billie Jean King later that year.)

1976 - The New York Nets defeat the Denver Nuggets in six games to win the ninth and final ABA championship.

1983 - Reggie Jackson became the first major league player to strike out 2,000 times.

1985 - Carlton Fisk became the 5th catcher in major league history to steal 100 bases.

1997 - Eddie Murray becomes the eighth player in MLB history to play in 3,000 games.
