1822 - Florida became a U.S. territory.

1842 - Anesthesia was used for the first time in an operation.

1856 - The Treaty of Paris was signed, ending the Crimean War.

1867 - U.S. Secretary of State William H. Seward reached agreement with Russia to purchase the territory of Alaska for $7.2 million (approximately two cents per acre), a deal ridiculed by critics as "Seward's Folly."

1870 - Texas was readmitted to the Union.

1870 - The 15th Amendment to the Constitution went into effect, guaranteeing the right to vote regardless of race.

1945 - The Soviet Union invaded Austria during World War II.

1959 - A narrowly divided U.S. Supreme Court, in Bartkus v. Illinois, ruled that a conviction in state court following an acquittal in federal court for the same crime did not constitute double jeopardy.

1964 - The game show "Jeopardy!" debuted on television.

1981 - President Ronald Reagan was shot and seriously wounded outside a Washington, D.C. hotel by John W. Hinckley Jr. Also wounded were White House news secretary James Brady, a Secret Service agent and a District of Columbia police officer.

1991 - Patricia Bowman of Jupiter, Florida, told authorities she'd been raped hours earlier by William Kennedy Smith, the nephew of Sen. Edward Kennedy, at the family's Palm Beach estate. (Smith was later acquitted at trial.)

1995 - Pope John Paul II issued an encyclical condemning abortion and euthanasia as crimes that no human laws could legitimize.

1999 - A jury in Portland, Oregon ordered Philip Morris to pay $81 million to the family of a man who died of lung cancer after smoking Marlboros for four decades.

2002 - The Queen Mother Elizabeth of England, mother of Queen Elizabeth II, died at age 101.

2006 - American reporter Jill Carroll, a freelancer for The Christian Science Monitor, was released after 82 days as a hostage in Iraq.

2009 - President Barack Obama asserted unprecedented government control over the auto industry, rejecting GM and Chrysler's restructuring plans and engineering the ouster of GM's chief executive, Rick Wagoner.

1925 - The Victoria Cougars of the WCHL become the last non-NHL team to win the Stanley Cup.

1940 - Indiana defeats Kansas 60-42 to win the NCAA Tournament.

1943 - Wyoming defeats Georgetown 46-34 to win the NCAA Tournament.

1970 - The Soviet Union wins its eight consecutive world hockey championship.

1980 - George Gervin (San Antonio) became the fifth NBA player to win at least three consecutive scoring titles.

1981 - Indiana defeats North Carolina 63-50 to win the NCAA Tournament.

1990 - Jack Nicklaus makes his debut on the PGA's Senior Tour.

1993 - The Ottawa Senators lost their 37th consecutive road game to tie the NHL record that had been set in 1975.

1993 - Peanuts comic strip character Charlie Brown hits a baseball game-winning home run, his first in 43 years.

1998 - Kentucky defeats Utah 78-69 to win the NCAA Tournament.

2002 - The Dallas Stars lost 3-1 to the Edmonton Oilers. The game ended the Stars' streak of 50 straight wins when leading after 2 periods.

2003 - WrestleMania XIX was held at Seattle. Triple H defeated Booker T for the World Heavyweight Championship, Hulk Hogan defeated Vince McMahon, The Rock defeated Stone Cold Steve Austin and Brock Lesnar defeated Kurt Angle for the WWE Championship in the main event matches.

2004 - NFL owners approved a modified version of the instant replay system for five years. They added a third coaches' challenge if the first two were successful.

2006 - Major League Baseball Commissioner Bud Selig appoints George Mitchell to head an investigation into the use of steroids in baseball.

2008 - WrestleMania XXIV was held in Orlando, Florida at the Citrus Bowl, the first WrestleMania since 1993 to be held outdoors. The main events saw Floyd Mayweather Jr. defeat the Big Show, Randy Orton defeat John Cena and Triple H for the WWE Championship and The Undertaker defeating Edge for the World Heavyweight Championship.
