1638 - Swedish colonists settled in present-day Delaware.

1790 - John Tyler, the 10th president of the United States, was born in Charles City County, Virginia.

1792 - Sweden's King Gustav III died, nearly two weeks after he had been shot and mortally wounded by an assassin during a masquerade party.

1848 - For the first time in recorded history, Niagara Falls stopped flowing. An ice jam in the Niagara River above the rim of the falls caused the water to stop.

1867 - The North America Act was passed by the British Parliament, creating the dominion of Canada.

1882 - The Knights of Columbus was chartered in Connecticut.

1912 - British explorer Robert Falcon Scott, his doomed expedition stranded in an Antarctic blizzard after failing to be the first to reach the South Pole, wrote the last words of his journal: "For Gods sake look after our people."

1943 - During World War II, the American rationing of meats, fats and cheese began.

1951 - Julius and Ethel Rosenberg were found guilty of passing atomic secrets to the Soviet Union and were sentenced to death. (The were executed in 1953.)

1971 - Lt. William Calley was convicted of murdering 22 Vietnamese civilians in the My Lai massacre. (He spent three years under house arrest.)

1971 - A jury in Los Angeles recommended the death penalty for Charles Manson and three female followers for the 1969 Tate-La Bianca murders. (Their sentences were later commuted.)

1973 - The last American troops left South Vietnam, ending America's direct military involvement with the Vietnam War.

1992 - Democratic presidential front-runner Bill Clinton acknowledged experimenting with marijuana "a time or two" while attending Oxford University, adding, "I didn't inhale and I didn't try it again."

1999 - The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed above 10,000 for the first time at 10,006.78.

2002 - Israel declared Yasir Arafat an enemy.

2006 - Hamas formally took over the Palestinian government.

1867 - Baseball pitching great Cy Young was born in Gilmore, Ohio.

1919 - Stanley Cup: Montréal (NHL) and Seattle (PCHA) win two games each with one tie; 1919 Stanley Cup not awarded due to flu epidemic.

1929 - The Boston Bruins sweep the New York Rangers to win the Stanley Cup. It was the first-ever Stanley Cup final between two American teams.

1941 - Wisconsin defeats Washington State 39-34 to win the NCAA Tournament.

1970 - Tony Esposito (Chicago Black Hawks) recorded his 15th shutout. It was an NHL record for rookie goalies and the most shut outs in the modern era.

1976 - Indiana defeats Michigan 86-68 to win the NCAA Tournament.

1982 - North Carolina defeats Georgetown 63-62 to win the NCAA Tournament.

1984 - Under the cover of early morning darkness, the Baltimore Colts football team left its home city of three decades and moved to Indianapolis.

1985 - Wayne Gretzky breaks own NHL season record with 126th assist.

1987 - Tennessee defeats Louisiana Tech 67-44 to win the NCAA women's tournament.

1987 - WrestleMania III was held at the Silverdome in Pontiac, Michigan. The main event saw Hulk Hogan defeat Andre the Giant for the WWF championship.

1988 - WrestleMania IV was held at the Atlantic City Convention Hall in Atlantic City, NJ. The main event saw "Macho Man" Randy Savage defeat "The Million Dollar Man" Ted DiBiase in the finals of a tournament to capture the vacant WWF championship.

1990 - Hakeem Olajuwon of the Houston Rockets records the third quadruple-double in NBA history with 18 points, 16 rebounds, 10 assists and 11 blocked shots against the Milwaukee Bucks.

1992 - Stanford defeats Western Kentucky 78-62 to win the NCAA women's tournament.

1998 - Tennessee defeats Louisiana Tech 93-75 to win the NCAA women's tournament.

1998 - WrestleMania XIV was held at the FleetCenter in Boston, MA. The main event saw Stone Cold Steve Austin defeat Shawn Michaels to win the WWF championship.

1999 - Wayne Gretzky of the New York Rangers scored the last of his NHL record 894 career goals in a game against the New York Islanders.

2010 - WrestleMania XXVI was held at University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, AZ. The main event saw John Cena defeat Batista for the WWE championship and The Undertaker defeat Shawn Michaels in a retirement match.

2013 - Jaromir Jagr (Dallas Stars) scored is 1,000th assist in a game against the Minnesota Wild. He was the 12th NHL player to reach 1,000 points and the first non-Canadian NHL player to reach the mark.

2015 - WrestleMania 31 was held at Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara, California. The main event saw Seth Rollins defeat Brock Lesnar and Randy Orton to win the WWE World Heavyweight championship.
