1556 - The Archbishop of Canterbury, Thomas Cranmer, was burned at the stake as a heretic.

1685 - Composer Johann Sebastian Bach was born in Germany.

1790 - Thomas Jefferson took office as America's first secretary of state.

1804 - The French Civil Code, the Code Napoleon, was adopted.

1871 - Journalist Henry M. Stanley began his trek to find the missionary and explorer David Livingstone.

1918 - Germany launched the Somme offensive during World War I, hoping to break through the Allied line before American reinforcements could arrive.

1960 - Police fired on black demonstrators in Sharpeville, South Africa, killing some 70 people.

1963 - Alcatraz prison in San Francisco Bay was emptied of its last inmates.

1965 - More than 3,000 civil rights demonstrators led by the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. began their march from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama.

1985 - Police in Langa, South Africa, opened fire on blacks marching to mark the 25th anniversary of the Sharpeville shootings, killing at least 21 demonstrators.

1987 - The album "The Joshua Tree" by U2 was released.

2000 - A divided Supreme Court ruled the government lacked the authority to regulate tobacco as an addictive drug.

2006 - The social media website Twitter lanunced with the first tweet by co-founder Jack Dorsey, which read: "just setting up my twttr"

2010 - The House of Representatives passed a bill that will overhaul the American health care system. The bill, called the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, was then sent to the White House to be signed into law.

1946 - The Mexican Baseball League began play.

1953 - Boston's Bob Cousy scored 50 points, including 25 in overtime, as the Celtics outlasted the Syracuse Nationals 111-105 in four overtimes in the Eastern Division semifinals of the NBA playoffs.

1968 - Kansas City, rewarded with an American League franchise, nicknamed themselves the Royals.

1975 - Georgia Tech defeated Earklham 41-0, an NCAA record for margin of victory in collegiate baseball.

1983 - Nebraska defeated Iona 85-73 in the second round of the NIT

1986 - America's Debi Thomas, a pre-med student at Stanford, dethroned Katarina Witt at the World Figure Skating Championships in Switzerland.

1987 - Nebraska defeated Washington 81-76 in the third round of the NIT

1994 - Wayne Gretzky tied Gordie Howe's NHL record of 801 career goals.

1994 - Michael Jordan was cut from the roster of the Chicago White Sox and sent down to their minor league club.

1995 - Nebraska lost to Penn State 59-65 in the second round of the NIT

1997 - Nebraska lost to Connecticut 67-76 in the third round of the NIT.

2004 - Philadelphia's Veterans Stadium was imploded.

2005 - The NFL announced it would play a regular season game outside of the United States for the first time in league history when the Arizona Cardinals would face the San Francisco 49ers in Mexico City.

2008 - Two 13-seeds won in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament with San Diego knocking off Connecticut 70-69 in overtime and Siena defeating Vanderbilt 83-62.

2012 - The NFL handed down suspensions in the "bounty gate" case. Saints coach Sean Payton was suspended for one year, former defensive coordinator Gregg Williams received an indefinite suspension while general manager Mickey Loomis was suspended for eight games. The team was also fined $500,000 and lost a second-round draft pick in each of the next two years.

2013 - 14-seed Harvard upset third-seed New Mexico 68-62 in the NCAA Tournament.

2014 - 14-seed Mercer upset 3-seed Duke 78-71 in the NCAA Tournament.
