1794 - Congress passed the Neutrality Act, which prohibited Americans from taking part in any military action against a country that was at peace with the United States.

1884 - Civil War hero Gen. William T. Sherman refused the Republican presidential nomination with the words: "I will not accept if nominated and will not serve if elected."

1917 - About 10 million American men between the ages of 21 and 31 began registering for the draft in World War I.

1933 - The United States went off the gold standard.

1947 - Sen. George Marshall proposed a plan (Marshall Plan) to help Europe recover financially from the effects of World War II.

1950 - The U.S. Supreme Court, in Henderson v. United States, struck down racially segregated railroad dining cars.

1967 - The Arab-Israeli Six-Day War erupted in the Middle East as Israel, anticipating a possible attack by its Arab neighbors, launched a series of pre-emptive airfield strikes that destroyed nearly the entire Egyptian air force; Syria, Jordan and Iraq immediately entered the conflict. (By the time fighting ended on the sixth day, Israel had captured the Sinai Peninsula, the Gaza Strip, the West Bank, East Jerusalem and the Golan Heights.)

1968 - Sen. Robert F. Kennedy was shot and mortally wounded just after claiming victory in California's Democratic presidential primary. Gunman Sirhan Bishara Sirhan was immediately arrested.

1976 - Fourteen people were killed when the Teton Dam in Idaho burst.

1981 - The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported that five homosexuals in Los Angeles had come down with a rare kind of pneumonia; they were the first recognized cases of what became known as AIDS.

1986 - A federal jury in Baltimore convicted Ronald W. Pelton of selling secrets to the Soviet Union. (Pelton was sentenced to three life prison terms plus ten years.)

1997 - Former CIA officer Harold J. Nicholson was sentenced to 23 1/2 years in prison for selling defense secrets to Russia after the Cold War.

2002 - Elizabeth Smart, 14, was kidnapped from her bedroom in her family's Salt Lake City home. (She was rescued in March 2003.)

2004 - Ronald Reagan, the 40th president of the United States, died in Los Angeles at age 93 after a long struggle with Alzheimer's disease.

2007 - Vice President Dick Cheney's former chief of staff, I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby, was sentenced to 2 1/2 years in prison for lying and obstructing the CIA leak investigation. (President George W. Bush later commuted the prison sentence.)

2012 - Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker beat back a recall challenge, winning both the right to finish his term and a voter endorsement of his strategy to curb state spending.

2013 - The British newspaper "The Guardian" published the first of many stories based on leaks by Edward Snowden about the top secret surveillance activities of the National Security Agency.

1957 - New York narcotics investigator, Dr Herbert Berger, urges AMA to investigate use of stimulating drugs by athletes.

1963 - The NHL held its first amateur draft. Twenty-one players were selected. Montreal chose first and selected Garry Monahan.

1967 - The NHL awarded six new franchises: the Minnesota North Stars (now Dallas Stars), Oakland Seals, Los Angeles Kings, Pittsburgh Penguins, Philadelphia Flyers and the St. Louis Blues.

1977 - The Portland Trail Blazers defeat the Philadelphia 76ers in six games to win the NBA championship.

1981 - Houston Astros' pitcher Nolan Ryan passes Early Wynn as the all-time walk leader [1,777] issuing two walks in a 3-0 win over the New York Mets.

1991 - Brett Hull (St. Louis Blues) won the Hart Trophy. The feat created the first father-and-son team to win the Hart Trophy.

2001 - With a home run in his 57th game, Barry Bonds becomes the fastest player ever to hit 30 home runs.

2002 - Hitting his 587th home run, Barry Bonds passes Frank Robinson becoming fourth on the all-time career home run list.

2005 - Nebraska defeated Creighton 10-2 to win the Lincoln Regional.

2006 - Cincinnati Reds' player Ken Griffey Junior hits a home run in his 43rd ballpark to tie the major league record also held by Fred McGriff.

2010 - Francesca Schiavone defeats Samantha Stosur 6-4, 7-6 (2) to win the womens singles French Open at Roland Garros stadium. Schiavone is the first Italian woman to win a Grand Slam tennis tournament.

2016 - Novak Djokovic became the first man in nearly 50 years to win four consecutive major championships and finally earned an elusive French Open title to complete a career Grand Slam after defeating Andy Murray.
