1586 - English colonists sailed from Roanoke Island, North Carolina, after failing to establish England's first permanent settlement in America.

1862 - Slavery was outlawed in U.S. territories.

1865 - Gen. Gordon Granger informed the citizens of Galveston, Texas that the slaves were freed. The celebration of the day became known as Juneteenth.

1910 - Father's Day was celebrated for the first time, in Spokane, Washington.

1917 - During World War I, King George V changed the British royal family's German-sounding surname, Saxe-Coburg-Gotha, to Windsor.

1934 - The Federal Communications Commission was established.

1961 - The Supreme Court struck down a provision in Maryland's constitution requiring state officeholders to profess a belief in God.

1964 - The Civil Rights Act of 1964 was approved after surviving an 83-day filibuster in the U.S. Senate.

1977 - Pope Paul VI proclaimed John Neumann the first male saint from the United States.

1987 - The Supreme Court struck down a Louisiana law requiring any public school teaching the theory of evolution to also teach creation science as well.

1999 - Britain's Prince Edward marred commoner Sophie Rhys-Jones in Windsor, England.

2000 - The Supreme Court, in a 6-3 ruling, barred officials from letting students lead stadium crowds in prayer before football games.

2007 - A truck bomb exploded at a Shiite mosque in Baghdad, killing at least 87.

2008 - Democrat Barack Obama announced he would bypass public financing for the presidential election, even though Republican John McCain was accepting it.

1846 - The first organized baseball game was played as the New York Knickerbocker Club played the New York Club at Elysian Field in Hoboken, New Jersey.

1867 - The inaugural Belmont Stakes was run at Jerome Park in the Bronx and was won by a filly, Ruthless, who won $1,850 for her victory.

1903 - Baseball Hall of Famer Lou Gehrig was born in New York City.

1936 - In one of the biggest upsets in boxing history, Germany's Max Schmelling recorded a 12th round knockout of Joe Louis for the heavyweight championship.

1942 - Paul Waner of the Boston Braves recorded his 3,000th hit.

1943 - The NFL approved the merger of the Philadelphia Eagles and the Pittsburgh Steelers.

1952 - Carl Erskine of the Brooklyn Dodgers no-hit the Chicago Cubs.

1972 - The Supreme Court ruled that the anti-trust exemption that major league baseball uses was constitutional. The court called upon the U.S. Congress to repeal the sport's special status.

1973 - Hockey legend Gordie Howe signed a four-year contract with the Houston Aeros of the World Hockey Association to play with his sons Mark and Marty..

1974 - Steve Busby of the Kansas City Royals no-hit the Milwaukee Brewers.

1986 - University of Maryland basketball star Len Bias died from a cocaine-induced seizure.

1987 - The Arena Football League made its debut.

1999 - The women's World Cup opened in a sold out Meadowlands Stadium in New Jersey. The United States defeated Denmark 3-0 in an opening round game.

1999 - The Dallas Stars won their first Stanley Cup, defeating the Buffalo Sabres.

2000 - The Los Angeles Lakers defeated the Indiana Pacers in six games to win the NBA championship.

2005 - Michael Campbell of New Zealand won the U.S. Open by two shots over Tiger Woods.

2005 - Nebraska lost to Florida 7-4 in a second round game at the College World Series.

2006 - The Carolina Hurricanes defeated the Edmonton Oilers to win the Stanley Cup.

2007 - Indiana football coach Terry Hoeppner died from complications from a brain tumor at the age of 59.
