1900 - China's Boxer Rebellion against foreigners and Chinese Christians erupted.

1927 - Aviator Charles Lindbergh was honored with a ticker-tape parade in New York City.

1942 - The first of two four-man Nazi sabotage teams arrived in the United States during World War II. (The eight were arrested after one of them went to U.S. authorities; six of the saboteurs were executed.)

1966 - The Supreme Court issued its landmark Miranda v. Arizona decision, ruling that criminal suspects must be informed of their constitutional rights prior to questioning by police.

1967 - Thurgood Marshall was nominated to become the first African American justice on the Supreme Court.

1971 - The New York Times began publishing the Pentagon Papers, a secret study of America's involvement in Vietnam.

1981 - A teenager fired six blanks shots at Queen Elizabeth II during a parade in London.

1996 - An 81-day standoff ended as 16 members of the anti-government Freemen group surrendered to the FBI and left their Montana ranch.

1997 - A jury voted unanimously to give Timothy McVeigh the death penalty for his role in the Oklahoma City bombing.

2004 - Former President George H.W. Bush celebrated his 80th birthday with a 13,000-foot parachute jump over his presidential library in College Station, Texas.

2005 - Singer Michael Jackson was acquitted on charges of molesting a 13-year-old cancer survivor at his Neverland ranch.

2009 - Incumbent Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was declared the winner of a disputed Iranian presidential vote, touching off weeks of mass demonstrations.

1947 - The first night game at Fenway Park is played as the Boston Red Sox beat the Chicago White Sox 5-3.

1948 - Babe Ruth makes his final public appearance at Yankee Stadium as the Yankees officially retired his #3 and sent it to the Hall of Fame.

1957 - Ted Williams becomes the first American League player to have two three-home run games in a season.

1989 - The Detroit Pistons swept the Los Angeles Lakers to win the NBA championship.

1991 - A spectator is killed by a lightning strike during the U.S. Open golf championships.

1997 - The Chicago Bulls win their fifth NBA championship, defeating the Utah Jazz in six games.
