1258 - The Oxford Parliament (also known as the "Mad Parliament") convened during the reign of King Henry III, who agreed to the creation of a privy council that would advise him and provide oversight, an arrangement which did not last.

1509 - King Henry VIII married his first wife, Katharine of Aragon.

1770 - Capt. James Cook discovered the Great Barrier Reef off Australia by running into it.

1937 - Eight members of the Soviet Red Army High Command accused of disloyalty were put on trial, convicted and immediately executed as part of Josef Stalin's Great Purge.

1942 - The United States and the Soviet Union signed a lend-lease agreement to aid the Soviet war effort in World War II.

1947 - The government announced the end of sugar rationing for households and "institutional users" (e.g. restaurants and hotels) as of midnight.

1962 - Three prisoners at Alcatraz Prison in San Francisco Bay staged an escape, leaving the island on a makeshift raft; they were never found or heard from again.

1963 - Vivian Malone and James Hood successfully enrolled at the University of Alabama following Gov. George Wallace's famous "stand in the schoolhouse door".

1963 - Buddhist monk Quang Duc immolated himself on a Saigon street to protest the government of South Vietnamese President Ngo Dinh Diem.

1977 - A 20-day hostage drama in the Netherlands ended as Dutch marines stormed a train and a school held by Moluccan extremists; six gunmen and two hostages on the train were killed.

1987 - Margaret Thatcher became the first British prime minister in 160 years to win a third consecutive term in office as her Conservatives held onto a reduced majority in Parliament.

1990 - The Supreme Court struck down a federal law prohibiting the desecration of the American flag.

1993 - The Supreme Court ruled that people who commit "hate crimes" motivated by bigotry may be sentenced to extra punishment. The court also ruled that religious groups had a constitutional right to sacrifice animals in worship services.

2001 - Timothy McVeigh, the 1995 Oklahoma City bomber, was executed at a federal prison in Terre Haute, Indiana.

2002 - Rock musician Paul McCartney married Heather Mills in a remote Irish castle. (The couple divorced in 2008.)

2002 - The reality show "American Idol" debuted on FOX.

2007 - Sen. Larry Craig (R-Idaho) was arrested at the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport in a restroom sex sting.

2009 - The World Health Organization declared the swine flu outbreak a pandemic.

2012 - The Los Angeles Kings defeated the New Jersey Devils in six games to win the Stanley Cup.

2016 - Queen Elizabeth II and her family marked her official 90th birthday with a parade, a colorful military ceremony and an appearance on the Buckingham Palace balcony.

1911 - Detroit Tigers, trailing Chicago White Sox 13-1 come back to win 16-15.

1913 - Hall of Fame football coach Vince Lombardi was born in New York City.

1919 - Sir Barton won the Belmont Stakes, becoming the first horse to capture the Triple Crown.

1938 - Johnny Vander Meer (Cincinnati Reds) threw the first of two consecutive no-hitters.

1950 - Ben Hogan returned to tournament play after a near fatal car accident. He won the U.S. Open.

1972 - Hank Aaron tied the National League record for 14 grand-slam home runs in a career.

1974 - The Kansas City Scouts and Washington Capitals officially received their NHL franchises. The Scouts moved to Denver before the start of the 1976-77 season to become the Colorado Rockies and later the New Jersey Devils.

1977 - Seattle Slew won the Belmont Stakes and the Triple Crown.

1988 - Rick Rhoden (New York Yankees) became the first pitcher to start as a designated hitter.

1990 - Nolan Ryan became the oldest player to throw a no-hitter. It was the sixth of his career.

1995 - Mark McGwire tied a major league record when he hit home runs in five consecutive games.

2005 - Nebraska defeated Miami (FL) 6-3 to win the Lincoln Super Regional and advance to the College World Series for the third time in five years.

2010 - The FIFA World Cup opened in South Africa, the first time soccer's biggest tournament was held on that continent.

2012 - Rafael Nadal won his record seventh French Open title.
