1829 - William Austin Burt of Mount Vernon, Michigan, received a patent for his typographer, a forerunner of the typewriter.

1885 - Ulysses S. Grant, the 18th president of the United States, died in Mount McGregor, New York, at age 63.

1914 - Austria-Hungary issued an ultimatum to Serbia following the killing of Archduke Francis Ferdinand by a Serb assassin; the dispute led to World War I.

1945 - French Marshal Henri Petain, who had headed the Vichy government during World War II, went on trial, charged with treason.

1952 - Egyptian military officers led by Gamal Abdel Nasser overthrew King Farouk I.

1967 - Rioting that claimed some 43 lives erupted in Detroit.

1984 - Vanessa Williams became the first Miss America to resign her title, because of nude photographs published in Penthouse magazine.

1985 - Commodore International Ltd. unveiled its Amiga 1000 personal computer during a press conference in New York.

1986 - Britain's Prince Andrew married Sarah Ferguson at Westminster Abbey in London. (The couple divorced in 1996.)

1990 - President George H.W. Bush announced his choice of David Souter to succeed the retiring Justice William J. Brennan on the Supreme Court.

1995 - The Hale-Bopp comet was discovered by Alan Hale and Thomas Bopp.

2003 - Massachusetts attorney general issued a report saying clergy members and others in the Boston Archdiocese probably sexually abused more than 1,000 people over six decades.

2011 - Singer Amy Winehouse, age 27, was found dead in her London home from accidental alcohol poisoning.

1969 - The National League won the All-Star Game 9-3 at RFK Stadium in Washington, D.C. Willie McCovey of the San Francisco Giants was named MVP.

1974 - The National League won the All-Star Game 7-2 at Three Rivers Stadium in Pittsburgh. Steve Garvey of the Los Angeles Dodgers was named MVP.

1980 - Dan Quisenberry of the Kansas City Royals recorded his 200th save faster than any other pitcher in major league history, doing so in just 409 appearances.

2000 - Lance Armstrong won his second straight Tour de France.

2000 - Tiger Woods became the youngest golfer, and just fifth ever, to complete a career Grand Slam when he won the British Open at age 24.

2001 - Roger Clemens passed Tom Seaver into fourth place on the all-time career strikeouts list.

2006 - Tiger Woods successfully defended his British Open crown.

2009 - Mark Buehrle of the Chicago White Sox pitched the 18th perfect game in major league history in a 5-0 win over the Tampa Bay Rays.

2012 - The NCAA hit Penn State University with a $60 million fine, a four-year postseason football ban, scholarship reductions and a vacating of all wins dating back to 1998 in the wake of the Jerry Sandusky child sex abuse scandal.
