1787 - The Congress of the Confederation adopted the Northwest Ordinance, which established a government in the Northwest Territory, an area corresponding to the eastern half of the present-day Midwest.

1793 - French revolutionary Jean Paul Marat was stabbed to death in his bath by royalist sympathizer Charlotte Corday.

1863 - Rioting against the Civil War military draft erupted in New York City; about 1,000 people died over three days.

1865 - P.T. Barnum's American Museum, which had featured Tom Thumb and the original Siamese twins Chang and Eng, was destroyed by fire.

1923 - A sign consisting of 50-foot-tall letters spelling out "HOLLYWOODLAND" was dedicated in the Hollywood Hills to promote a subdivision (the last four letters were removed in 1949)

1943 - The Battle of Kursk, the largest tank battle in history -- involving some 6,000 tanks, more than 2 million troops and over 4,000 aircraft -- ended in German defeat.

1960 - John F. Kennedy won the Democratic presidential nomination on the first ballot at his party's convention in Los Angeles, outdrawing rivals including Lyndon B. Johnson, Stuart Symington and Adlai Stevenson.

1965 - President Lyndon B. Johnson nominated Thurgood Marshall to be U.S. Solicitor General; Marshall became the first black jurist appointed to the post. (Two years later, Johnson nominated Marshall to the U.S. Supreme Court.)

1977 - A 25-hour blackout hit New York City after lightning struck upstate power facilities, engendering widespread rioting and looting.

1978 - Lee Iacocca was fired as president of Ford Motor Co. by chairman Henry Ford II.

1985 - Live Aid, a concert to raise money for Africa's starving people, was held in London, Philadelphia, Moscow and Sydney, Australia.

2003 - Iraq's interim governing council was inaugurated.

2008 - Anheuser-Busch agreed to a takeover by giant Belgian brewer InBev SA.

2013 - A jury in Sanford, Florida, cleared neighborhood watch volunteer George Zimmerman of all charges in the shooting of Trayvon Martin, the unarmed black teenager whose killing unleashed furious debate over racial profiling, self-defense and equal justice.

2017 - A federal judge in Hawaii weakened President Donald Trump's travel ban by vastly expanding the list of U.S. family relationships that visitors from six Muslim-majority countries could use to get into the country.

1896 - Ed Delahanty becomes second major league player to hit four home runs in a game.

1900 - The Philadelphia Phillies rout the Pittsburgh Pirates 23-8.

1930 - The first World Cup soccer tournament began play in Montevideo, Uruguay. The inaugural game saw France defeat Mexico 4-1.

1934 - Babe Ruth hits his 700th career home run.

1943 - The American League wins the All-Star Game 5-4 in Philadelphia. It was the first-ever All-Star Game to be played at night.

1948 - American League wins the All-Star Game 5-2 in St. Louis.

1954 - Pitcher Dean Stone gets credit for American League win, although he didn't retire a batter; he threw out Shoendienst trying to steal home. American League beats National League 11-9 in 21st All Star Game in Cleveland.

1960 - The National League wins the All-Star Game 6-0 in New York.

1963 - Early Wynn wins his 300th and last game at age 43.

1965 - The National League wins the All-Star Game 6-5 in Minneapolis.

1971 - The American League wins the All-Star Game 6-4 in Detroit.

1972 - Carroll Rosenbloom (owner of the Baltimore Colts) and Robert Irsay (owner of the Los Angeles Rams) traded teams.

1976 - The National League wins the All-Star Game 7-1 in Philadelphia.

1982 - The National League wins its 11th All-Star Game in a row, defeating the American League 4-1 in Montreal in the first All-Star Game to be played outside the United States.

1984 - The New York Yankees retire Roger Maris' #9 and Elston Howard's #32.

1993 - The American League wins the All-Star Game 9-3 in Baltimore.

1999 - The American League wins the All-Star Game 4-1 in Boston.

2001 - Beijing, China is awarded the 2008 Summer Olympic Games.

2004 - The American League wins the All-Star Game 9-4 in Houston.

2010 - The National League wins the All-Star Game for the first time since 1996 in Anaheim by a score of 3-1. The American League had won 12 All-Star Games in the previous 13 years. (The two leagues played to a tie in 2002.)
