1533 - England's King Henry VIII was excommunicated by Pope Clement VII.

1767 - John Quincy Adams, the sixth president of the United States, was born in Braintree, Massachusetts.

1798 - The United States Marine Corps was created by an act of Congress.

1804 - Vice President Aaron Burr mortally wounded former Treasury Secretary Alexander Hamilton in a pistol duel near Weehawken, New Jersey.

1859 - Big Ben, the great bell inside the famous London clock tower, chimed for the first time.

1864 - Confederate Gen. Jubal A. Early and his troops attacked Washington, D.C. They retreated the next day, ending the Confederate threat to occupy the capital.

1952 - The Republican National Committee nominated Dwight D. Eisenhower for president and Richard M. Nixon for vice president.

1955 - The United States Air Force Academy was dedicated at Lowry Air Base in Colorado.

1960 - "To Kill a Mockingbird", Harper Lee's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, was published.

1977 - The Medal of Freedom was awarded posthumously to the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. in a White House ceremony.

1979 - The abandoned United States space station Skylab made a spectacular return to Earth, burning up in the atmosphere and showering debris over the Indian Ocean and Australia.

1989 - Actor Laurence Olivier died.

1995 - The Untied States normalized relations with Vietnam.

2007 - Former first lady Lady Bird Johnson died in Austin, Texas at age 94.

1914 - Baseball Hall of Famer Babe Ruth made his major league debut as a pitcher for the Boston Red Sox.

1939 - The American League won the All-Star Game 3-1 at Yankee Stadium in New York.

1944 - The National League won the All-Star Game 7-1 at Forbes Field in Pittsburgh.

1950 - The National League won the All-Star Game 4-3 in 14 innings at Comiskey Park in Chicago.

1960 - The National League won the All-Star Game 5-3 at Municipal Stadium in Kansas City.

1961 - The National League won the All-Star Game 5-4 in 10 innings at Candlestick Park in San Francisco.

1967 - The National League won the All-Star Game 2-1 in 15 innings at Anaheim Stadium. Tony Perez of the Cincinnati Reds was named MVP.

1978 - The National League won the All-Star Game 7-3 at San Diego Stadium in San Diego. Steve Garvey of the Los Angeles Dodgers was named MVP.

1985 - Nolan Ryan of the Houston Astros became the first pitcher in major league history to record 4,000 strikeouts.

1987 - Bo Jackson of the Kansas City Royals signed a five-year contract to also play football in the NFL, for the Los Angeles Raiders.

1989 - The American League won the All-Star Game 5-3 at Anaheim Stadium in Anaheim, CA. Bo Jackson of the Kansas City Royals was named MVP.

1995 - The National League won the All-Star Game 3-2 at The Ballpark in Arlington, TX. Jeff Conine of the Florida Marlins was named MVP.

2000 - The American League won the All-Star Game 6-3 at Turner Field in Atlanta. Derek Jeter of the New York Yankees was named MVP.

2006 - The American League won the All-Star Game 7-5 at PNC Park in Pittsburgh. Michael Young of the Texas Rangers was named MVP.

2010 - Spain defeated The Netherlands 1-0 on a goal in the 116th minute to win the World Cup.

2014 - LeBron James announced he would return to the Cleveland Cavaliers.
