1547 - King Henry VIII of England died and his nine-year-old son, Edward VI, assumed the throne.

1813 - The novel "Pride and Prejudice" by Jane Austen was first published anonymously in London.

1915 - The United States Coast Guard was created as President Woodrow Wilson signed a bill merging the Life-Saving Service and the Revenue Cutter Service.

1916 - Louis Brandeis, the first Jewish member of the United States Supreme Court, was appointed by President Woodrow Wilson.

1922 - The roof of the Knickerbocker Theatre in Washington, D.C. collapsed under the weight of nearly two feet of snow, killing 98 people.

1945 - During World War II, Allied supplies began reaching China over the newly reopened Burma Road.

1956 - Elvis Presley made his first national television appearance on CBS.

1973 - A cease-fire officially went into effect in the Vietnam War, one day after the signing of the Paris Peace Accords by the United States, North Vietnam and South Vietnam.

1980 - Six U.S. diplomats who had avoided being taken hostage at their embassy in Tehran, flew out of Iran with the help of Canadian diplomats.

1982 - Italian anti-terrorism forces rescued U.S. Brigadier General James L. Dozier, 42 days after he had been kidnapped by the Red Brigades.

1986 - The space shuttle Challenger exploded 72 seconds after lift off from Cape Canaveral, Florida, killing all seven crew members aboard, including school teacher Christa McAuliffe.

1999 - The creation of Element 114 is announced by scientists.

2003 - In his second State of the Union address, President George W. Bush presented his case for war with Iraq.

2011 - Chaos erupted in Egypt as protesters seized the streets of Cairo, battling police, burning down the ruling party's headquarters and defying a military curfew.

2013 - Lynyrd Skynyrd keyboard player Billy Powell, who survived the 1977 plane crash that killed three other band members, died in Orange Park, Florida at age 56.

2018 - Bruno Mars won all six Grammy Awards for which he was nominated, including Album of the Year for "24K Magic."

2021 - Cicely Tyson, the pioneering Black actor who gained an Oscar nomination for her role as the sharecropper's wife in "Sounder" and touched TV viewers' hearts in "The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman," died at age 96.

1904 - The University of Chicago awarded blankets with the letter C to all seniors that played football during the 1903 season. This event marked the beginning of the sports letter tradition.

1922 - The NFL's Decatur Staleys moved to Chicago and became the Chicago Bears.

1958 - Roy Campanella (Brooklyn Dodgers) was seriously injured in an auto accident in New York. He would never return to play again.

1990 - The San Francisco 49ers defeated the Denver Broncos 55-10 to win Super Bowl XXIV.

1996 - The Dallas Cowboys defeated the Pittsburgh Steelers 27-17 to win Super Bowl XXX.

2001 - The Baltimore Ravens defeat the New York Giants 34-7 to win Super Bowl XXXV.

2003 - The WNBA announced that Connecticut had been awarded a franchise for the 2003 season. The team, the Connecticut Sun, was the first WNBA team to be owned by a non-NBA owner (the Mohegan Sun).

2017 - Serena Williams won her record 23rd Grand Slam singles title after defeating her sister, Venus, in the Australian Open for what would be her final major championship.
