1547 - King Henry VIII of England died and his nine-year-old son, Edward VI, assumed the throne.

1813 - The novel "Pride and Prejudice" by Jane Austen was first published anonymously in London.

1871 - France surrendered in the Franco-Prussian War.

1909 - The United States ended direct control over Cuba.

1915 - Congress passed legislation creating the U.S. Coast Guard.

1916 - The first Jewish Associate Justice on the U.S. Supreme Court, Louis Brandeis, was appointed.

1973 - A cease-fire officially went into effect in the Vietnam War.

1978 - Fire swept through the historic downtown Coates House hotel in Kansas City, Missouri, killing 20 people.

1980 - Six U.S. diplomats who had avoided being taken hostage at their embassy in Tehran flew out of Iran under false identities.

1986 - The space shuttle Challenger exploded 72 seconds after liftoff from Cape Canaveral, Florida, killing all seven crew members aboard, including school teacher Christa McAuliffe.

1999 - The creation of Element 114 is announced by scientists.

1999 - Ford Motor Co. announced it was buying the Volvo car division in a $6.45 billion deal. (Ford ended up selling the Volvo unit in 2010 to China's Zhejiang Geely Holding Group for $1.8 billion.)

1999 - Missouri Gov. Mel Carnahan, honoring a personal request for mercy from Pope John Paul II, spared a triple murderer from execution.

2003 - President George W. Bush said in his State of the Union address that Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein had sought uranium from Africa. (The claim was later disputed by former ambassador Joseph Wilson, who had been asked by the CIA to investigate.)

2009 - In a swift victory for President Barack Obama, the Democratic-controlled House approved a $819 billion stimulus bill.

2010 - Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke won Senate confirmation for a second term.

1904 - First college sports letters: Seniors who played on University of Chicago's football team are awarded blankets with letter "C" on them.

1922 - The National Football League franchise in Decatur, IL, transferred to Chicago. The team took the name Chicago Bears.

1922 - The American Pro Football Association is renamed the "National Football League".

1958 - Brooklyn Dodgers' catcher Roy Campanella is paralyzed in an automobile wreck.

1959 - The Soviet Union hands the United States its first-ever loss in international men's basketball, 62-37.

1959 - Vince Lombardi was named head coach of the NFL's Green Bay Packers.

1960 - The NFL announces the addition of the Dallas Cowboys and Minnesota Vikings franchises.

1968 - Goose Goslin and Kiki Cuyler elected to baseball Hall of Fame.

1973 - Mickey Welch, George Kelly, and Billy Evans elected to Baseball Hall of Fame.

1990 - The San Francisco 49ers defeat the Denver Broncos 55-10 in New Orleans to win Super Bowl XXIV, their fourth Super Bowl title. San Francisco quarterback Joe Montana is named MVP.

1996 - The Dallas Cowboys defeat the Pittsburgh Steelers 27-17 in Tempe to win Super Bowl XXX, and became the first team to ever win three Super Bowls in a four-year span. Dallas defensive back Larry Brown is named MVP.

2001 - The Baltimore Ravens defeated the New York Giants 34-7 in Tampa to win Super Bowl XXXV. Baltimore linebacker Ray Lewis was named MVP.

2003 - The WNBA announced that Connecticut had been awarded a franchise for the 2003 season. The team, the Connecticut Sun, was the first WNBA team to be owned by a non-NBA owner (the Mohegan Sun).

2017 - Serena Williams won her record 23rd Grand Slam singles title, defeating her sister Venus 6-4, 6-4 at the Australian Open.
