1533 - England's King Henry VIII secretly married Anne Boleyn, his second wife, who later gave birth to Elizabeth I.

1787 - Shays' Rebellion suffered a setback when debt-ridden farmers led by Capt. Daniel Shays failed to capture an arsenal at Springfield, Massachusetts.

1858 - Britain's Princess Victoria, the eldest daughter of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, married Crown Prince Frederick William, the future German Emperor and King of Prussia, at St. James's Palace. (The ceremony's tradition-setting music, personally selected by the Princess Royal, included the "Bridal Chorus" from Richard Wagner's "Lohengrin" and the "Wedding March" by Felix Mendelssohn.)

1890 - Reporter Nellie Bly of the New York World completed a round-the-world journey in 72 days, 6 hours and 11 minutes.

1890 - The United Mine Workers of America was founded in Columbus, Ohio.

1915 - Alexander Graham Bell inaugurated transcontinental telephone service as he spoke to his former assistant Thomas Watson in San Francisco from New York, courtesy of a line set up by American Telephone & Telegraph.

1945 - The World War II Battle of the Bulge came to an end as German forces were pushed back to their original positions.

1945 - Grand Rapids, Michigan became the first American city to add fluoride to its municipal water supply.

1955 - The Soviet Union formally ended its state of war with Germany.

1959 - American Airlines opened the jet age in the United States with the first scheduled transcontinental flight of a Boeing 707.

1961 - President John F. Kennedy held the first presidential news conference carried live on radio and television.

1971 - Charles Manson was found guilty of murdering Sharon Tate and six others.

1981 - The 52 Americans held hostage by Iran for 444 days arrived in the United States.

1988 - Vice President George H.W. Bush and Dan Rather clashed on "The CBS Evening News" as the anchorman attempted to question the Republican presidential candidate about his role in the Iran-Contra affair.

1993 - A gunman shot and killed two CIA employees outside agency headquarters in Virginia. (A Pakistani national was later convicted and was executed in 2002.)

2006 - The Islamic militant group Hamas won a large majority of seats in Palestinian parliamentary elections.

2011 - Egypt's revolution began as thousands of anti-government protesters clashed with police during a Tunisia-inspired demonstration to demand the end of President Hosni Mubarak's rule.

2017 - The Dow Jones industrial average closed above 20,000 points for the first time, ending the day at 20,068, two months after the index crossed 19,000 points.

1924 - The first Winter Olympic Games opened at Chamonix, France.

1945 - Dan Topping, Del Webb, and Larry MacPhail purchase New York Yankees for $2.8 million.

1981 - The Oakland Raiders defeat the Philadelphia Eagles 27-10 to win Super Bowl XV in New Orleans. Raiders quarterback Jim Plunkett is named MVP. The Raiders were the first wildcard playoff team to win a Super Bowl.

1987 - The New York Giants defeated the Denver Broncos 39-20 in Pasadena to win Super Bowl XXI. New York quarterback Phil Simms is named MVP. It was the first championship for the Giants since 1956.

1989 - Michael Jordan of the Chicago Bulls scores his 10,000th career point in just his fifth season.

1991 - Brett Hull is third NHL player to score 50 goals in less than 50 games (49).

1998 - The Denver Broncos become the first AFC team to win a Super Bowl in 14 years as they defeated the Green Bay Packers 31-24 to win Super Bowl XXXII in San Diego. Denver running back Terrell Davis was named MVP.
