1582 - Pope Gregory XIII issued a papal bull introducing the Gregorian calendar reform. (The Gregorian calendar is the calendar in general use today.)

1803 - The Supreme Court ruled in Marbury v. Madison that any act of Congress which conflicts with the Constitution is null and void.

1821 - Mexico declared independence from Spain.

1863 - Arizona was organized as a territory.

1868 - Andrew Johnson, the 17th president of the United States, became the first president to have impeachment hearings brought against him by the House of Representatives following his attempted dismissal of Secretary of War Edwin M. Stanton. (Johnson was later acquitted by the Senate.)

1903 - The lease for Guantanamo Bay, Cuba was signed.

1920 - Adolf Hitler outlined the basic points of the German Workers Party, later the Nazi party, at the Hofbraunhaus in Munich.

1938 - The first nylon bristle toothbrush, manufactured by DuPont under the name "Dr. West's Miracle Toothbrush", went on sale.

1942 - The SS Struma, a charter ship attempting to carry nearly 800 Jewish refugees from Romania to British-mandated Palestine during World War II, sank in the Black Sea off Turkey after it was torpedoed by a Soviet submarine; all but one of the refugees on board perished.

1955 - Apple Computer co-founder Steve Jobs was born in San Francisco.

1968 - The discovery of a pulsar was announced.

1975 - The Congressional Budget Office, charged with providing independent analyses of budgetary and economic issues, began operating under its first director, Alice Rivlin.

1981 - Buckingham Palace announced the engagement of Britain's Prince Charles to Lady Diana Spencer.

1983 - A congressional commission released a report condemning the internment of Japanese-Americans during World War II as a "grave injustice".

1987 - Fawn Hall, former personal secretary to fired National Security Council aide Oliver L. North, posed for news photographers outside her attorney's office, calling the attention "a little overwhelming".

1992 - Nirvana lead singer Kurt Cobain married Hole lead vocalist Courtney Love in Hawaii.

1999 - Lauryn Hill won five Grammys for her debut solo album, "The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill".

2006 - South Dakota lawmakers approved a ban on nearly all abortions.

2007 - The Virginia General Assembly passed a resolution expressing "profound regret" for the state's role in slavery.

2008 - Cuba's parliament named Raul Castro president, ending nearly 50 years of rule by his brother, Fidel.

2016 - Surgeons at the Cleveland Clinic performed the nation's first uterus transplant on a 26-year-old woman, using an organ from a deceased donor. (The transplant later failed.)

1978 - Kevin Porter of the New Jersey Nets sets an NBA record with 29 assists in a game.

1980 - The U.S. Olympic hockey team defeated Finland 4-2 to win the gold medal at the Winter Games in Lake Placid, New York.

1980 - The 13th Winter Olympic Games closed in Lake Placid, New York. The East Germany won the medal race with 23 total medals. The Soviet Union was second with 22 and the United States a distant third with 12. In the gold medal count, the USSR won 10 golds, East Germany nine and the U.S. finished third with six.

1980 - Wayne Gretzky of the Edmonton Oilers became the first player in NHL history to score 100 points in a season before the age of 20.

1982 - Wayne Gretzky of the Edmonton Oilers scores his 77th goal of the season, breaking the NHL single season record of 76 set by Phil Esposito. (Gretzky would end up with 92 goals for the season and 212 points. He was the first player to ever finish a season with more than 200 points.)

1985 - Jim Kelly of the Houston Gamblers (USFL) sets a professional football record by throwing for 574 yards.

1987 - Kareem Abdul-Jabbar of the Los Angeles Lakers scores his 36,000th NBA point.

1998 - The NHL resumes its season, suspended since February 8th, to accommodate the Winter Olympic Games in Nagano, Japan.

2007 - Denver Broncos running back Damien Nash, age 24, collapsed and died after hosting a charity basketball game in suburban St. Louis.
