1065 - Westminster Abbey was consecrated.

1694 - Queen Mary II of England died after five years of joint rule with her husband, King William III.

1832 - John C. Calhoun became the first vice president in U.S. history to resign from office, stepping down over differences with President Andrew Jackson.

1846 - Iowa became the 29th state.

1856 - Thomas Woodrow Wilson, the 28th president of the United States, was born in Staunton, Virginia.

1869 - William F. Semple patented chewing gum.

1895 - The Lumiere Brothers showed the first commercial movie at the Grand Cafe in Paris.

1945 - Congress officially recognized the Pledge of Allegiance.

1961 - Former first lady Edith Bolling Galt Wilson, the second wife of President Woodrow Wilson, died in Washington at age 89.

1973 - Alexander Solzhenitsyn published "Gulag Archipelago," an expose of the Soviet prison system.

1981 - Elizabeth Jordan Carr, the first American test tube baby, was born in Norfolk, Virginia.

1982 - A black man was mortally wounded by a police officer in a Miami video arcade, setting off three days of race-related disturbances that left another man dead.

1987 - The bodies of 14 relatives of Ronald Gene Simmons were found at his home near Dover, Arkansas, after Simmons shot and killed two other people in Russellville. (Simmons, who never explained his motives, was executed in 1990.)

2005 - Former top Enron Corp. accountant Richard Causey pleaded guilty to securities fraud and agreed to help pursue convictions against Enron founder Kenneth Lay and former CEO Jeffrey Skilling.

2016 - Actress Debbie Reynolds died at age 84, one day after losing her daughter, actress Carrie Fisher.

1902 - The first professional indoor football game was played at Madison Square Garden in New York City. Syracuse defeated the Philadelphia Nationals 6-0.

1905 - The forerunner of the NCAA, the Intercollegiate Athletic Association of the United States, was founded in New York City. (The NCAA would form in 1910.)

1918 - Georges Vezina (Montreal Canadiens) became the first NHL goalie to record an assist. The assist came on a goal by Newsy Lalonde.

1947 - The Chicago Cardinals defeated the Philadelphia Eagles 28-21 in the NFL championship game.

1952 - The Detroit Lions defeated the Cleveland Browns 17-7 in the NFL championship game.

1958 - The Baltimore Colts defeated the New York Giants 23-17 in the NFL championship game in overtime at Yankee Stadium, in what has been dubbed "the greatest football game ever played".

1975 - The Dallas Cowboys defeat the Minnesota Vikings 17-14 on a last second 50-yard hail mary touchdown pass in an NFC divisional playoff game.

1975 - The Soviet national hockey team defeats the New York Rangers 7-3 at Madison Square Garden.

2003 - Jamal Lewis of the Baltimore Ravens became just the fifth player in NFL history to rush for more than 2,000 yards in a season, ending the year with 2,029 yards. He joined O.J. Simpson (1973), Eric Dickerson (1984), Barry Sanders (1997) and Terrell Davis (1998) in the exclusive club. (Since then, Chris Johnson (2009) and Adrian Peterson (2012) also joined the 2,000-yard club.)

2003 - Mike Vanderjagt of the Indianapolis Colts set a new NFL record by converting his 41st consecutive field goal.

2003 - Priest Holmes of the Kansas City Chiefs set an NFL record with his 27th touchdown of the season.

2005 - Nebraska upset #20 Michigan 32-28 to win the Alamo Bowl. Nebraska ended the season with a 8-4 record and ranked #24 in both final polls.

2008 - The Detroit Lions lost to the Green Bay Packers 31-21, becoming the first team in NFL history to finish the season with an 0-16 record.
