1612 - Italian astronomer Galileo Galilei observed the planet Neptune, but mistook it for a star. (Neptune wasn't officially discovered until 1846 by Johann Gottfried Galle.)

1694 - Queen Mary II of England died after five years of joint rule with her husband, King William III.

1832 - John C. Calhoun became the first vice president of the United States to resign, stepping down over differences with President Andrew Jackson.

1846 - Iowa became the 29th state.

1856 - Thomas Woodrow Wilson, the 28th president of the United States, was born in Staunton, Virginia.

1869 - William F. Semple patented chewing gum.

1945 - Congress officially recognized the Pledge of Allegiance.

1973 - Alexander Solzhenitsyn published "Gulag Archipelago", an expose of the Soviet prison system.

1981 - Elizabeth Jordan Carr, the first American test-tube baby, was born in Norfolk, Virginia.

1982 - A black man was mortally wounded by a police officer in a Miami video arcade, setting off three days of race-related disturbances that left another man dead.

2005 - Former Enron Corp. accountant Richard Causey pleaded guilty to securities fraud and agreed to help pursue convictions against Enron founder Kenneth Lay and former CEO Jeffrey Skilling.

1902 - The first professional indoor football game was played at Madison Square Garden. Syracuse defeated the Philadelphia Nationals 6-0.

1905 - The forerunner of the NCAA, the Intercollegiate Athletic Association of the United States, was founded in New York City.

1918 - Georges Vezina (Montreal Canadiens) became the first NHL goalie to record an assist. The assist came on a goal by Newsy Lalonde.

1947 - The Chicago Cardinals defeat the Philadelphia Eagles 28-21 in the NFL championship game.

1952 - The Detroit Lions defeat the Cleveland Browns 17-7 in the NFL championship game.

1958 - The Baltimore Colts defeated the New York Giants 23-17 in overtime in the NFL championship game at Yankee Stadium, in what has been dubbed the greatest football game ever played.

1975 - The Dallas Cowboys defeat the Minnesota Vikings 17-14 on a last second Hail Mary pass to win a playoff game.

1975 - The Soviet national hockey team defeats the New York Rangers 7-3 at Madison Square Garden.

2003 - Jamal Lewis of the Baltimore Ravens became the fifth player in NFL history to rush for 2,000 yards in a single season, joining Eric Dickerson, O.J. Simpson, Barry Sanders and Terrell Davis.

2003 - Mike Vanderjagt of the Indianapolis Colts set a new NFL record when he kicked his 41st consecutive field goal.

2003 - Priest Holmes of the Kansas City Chiefs set an NFL record with his 27th touchdown of the season.

2005 - Nebraska upset #20 Michigan 32-28 to win the Alamo Bowl. Nebraska finished the season with a 8-4 record and a #24 ranking in both the AP and Coaches polls.

2008 - The Detroit Lions completed the first 0-16 season in NFL history, the worst season in league history, after a 31-21 loss to the Green Bay Packers.
