1745 - John Jay, statesman and the first chief justice of the Supreme Court, was born in New York City.

1787 - Pennsylvania became the second state to ratify the U.S. Constitution.

1870 - Joseph H. Rainey of South Carolina took his seat in the U.S. House of Representatives, becoming the first black congressman.

1913 - The Mona Lisa was recovered in Florence, Italy after having been stolen two years earlier from the Louvre.

1914 - The New York Stock Exchange re-opened for the first time since July 30. The market had shut down at the outbreak of World War I.

1915 - Frank Sinatra was born in Hoboken, New Jersey.

1917 - Father Edward Flanagan founded Boys Town outside of Omaha, Nebraska.

1925 - The first motel, the Motel Inn, opened, in San Luis Obispo, California.

1946 - A United Nations committee voted to accept a six-block tract of Manhattan real estate offered as a gift by John D. Rockefeller Jr. to be the site of the U.N. headquarters.

1947 - The United Mine Workers union withdrew from the American Federation of Labor.

1963 - Kenya gained its independence from Britain.

1975 - Sara Jane Moore pleaded guilty to trying to kill President Gerald R. Ford. (She was sentenced to life in prison but was paroled on New Year's Eve 2007 after serving 32 years behind bars.)

1998 - The House Judiciary Committee approved a fourth article of impeachment against President Bill Clinton and submitted the case to the full House.

2000 - A divided U.S. Supreme Court halted the presidential recount in Florida, effectively making Republican George W. Bush the winner over incumbent Vice President Al Gore.

2003 - Keiko, the killer whale made famous by the "Free Willy" movies, died in a Norwegian fjord.

2009 - Houston became the largest U.S. city to elect an openly gay mayor, with voters handing a solid victory to City Controller Annise Parker.

1930 - The Major League Rules Committee revises the rule book, and a ball that bounces into the stands becomes a double instead of a home run.

1937 - The Washington Redskins defeated the Chicago Bears 28-21 to win the NFL Championship Game.

1949 - The American League rejects a call to legalize the spitball.

1965 - Gale Sayers of the Chicago Bears ties an NFL record with six touchdowns scored in a game.

1966 - The U.S. Supreme Court rules in favor of the Braves organization, allowing them to move from Milwaukee to Atlanta.

1968 - Arthur Ashe became the first black man to be ranked #1 in the world in tennis.

1973 - The city of San Diego files an anti-trust case against the National League to prevent the Padres from moving to Washington, D.C.

1976 - Joe Namath plays his final game with the New York Jets.

1981 - Wayne Gretzky of the Edmonton Oilers became the fastest player in NHL history to score 50 goals in a season, doing so in just 39 games.

1987 - Mookie Blaylock sets an NBA record with 13 steals in one game.

1987 - Oklahoma sets an NCAA record with 33 steals in a game against Centenary.

1991 - The New Jersey Nets set an NBA record with 22 blocked shots against the Denver Nuggets.

1992 - Miami (FL) quarterback Gino Torretta won the Heisman Trophy.

1997 - The Boston Red Sox sign Pedro Martinez to a record six-year, $69 million contract.

1998 - #3 Nebraska defeated #8 Wisconsin (12-15, 18-16, 9-15, 15-10, 15-10) to advance to the NCAA Final Four in volleyball.

1998 - Pitcher Kevin Brown becomes baseball's first $100 million man as he signs a seven-year contract worth $105 million with the Los Angeles Dodgers.

1998 - Texas running back Ricky Williams won the Heisman Trophy.

2009 - Alabama running back Mark Ingram won the Heisman Trophy.

2009 - Nebraska defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh finished fourth in Heisman Trophy voting.

2009 - #2 Texas defeated #7 Nebraska (21-25, 25-18, 25-16, 25-17) in the Regional Finals of the NCAA Volleyball Tournament.


2010 - The collapse of the inflatable roof at the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome in Minneapolis due to heavy snowfall forced the cancellation of a game between the Minnesota Vikings and the New York Giants. The teams met the next day at Detroit's Ford Field.

2011 - Baylor quarterback Robert Griffin III won the Heisman Trophy.

2015 - Alabama running back Derrick Henry won the Heisman Trophy.

2015 - #5 Nebraska defeated #1 Washington (25-17, 21-25, 25-20, 25-21) to win the Lexington, KY regional and advance to the NCAA Volleyball Tournament Final Four.
