1588 - English forces attacked the Spanish Armada, permanently crippling Spain's "invincible" fleet.

1786 - Dr. Michael-Gabriel Paccard and Jacques Balmat became the first to climb Mont Blanc.

1815 - Napoleon Bonaparte set sail for St. Helena, in the South Atlantic, to spend the remainder of his days in exile.

1844 - Brigham Young was chosen to lead the Mormons following the killing of Joseph Smith.

1876 - Thomas A. Edison received a patent for the mimeograph.

1911 - President Howard Taft signed a measure raising the number of U.S. representatives from 391 to 433, effective with the next Congress, with a provision to add two more when New Mexico and Arizona became states.

1942 - During World War II, six Nazi saboteurs who were captured after landing in the U.S. were executed in Washington, D.C.; two others who cooperated with authorities were spared.

1945 - President Harry S. Truman signed the United Nations Charter.

1945 - The Soviet Union declared war against Japan during World War II.

1963 - Britain's "Great Train Robbery" took place as thieves made off with 2.6 million pounds ($6 million) in banknotes from a train they stopped north of London.

1968 - Richard Nixon was nominated for president at the Republican National Convention in Miami Beach and chose Maryland Gov. Spiro T. Agnew to be his running mate.

1969 - Sharon Tate, wife of director Roman Polanski, and four others were murdered by members of Charles Manson's "family".

1974 - President Richard Nixon announced he would resign from office the next day following damaging revelations in the Watergate scandal.

1988 - U.N. Secretary-General Javier Perez de Cuellar announced a cease-fire between Iran and Iraq.

2005 - Iran resumed work at a uranium conversion facility after suspending activities for nine months to avoid U.N. sanctions.

2006 - Sen. Joseph Lieberman lost the Connecticut Democratic primary to political newcomer Ned Lamont. (Lieberman won re-election as an independent.)

2008 - Former Democratic Vice Presidential candidate John Edwards admitted having had an extramarital affair.

1900 - The first Davis Cup tennis tournament began in Brookline, Massachusetts. The U.S. defeated Great Britain three matches to zero.

1903 - Joe McGinnity of the New York Giants pitched two complete games in one day, beating the Brooklyn Dodgers 6-1 and 4-3.

1920 - Howard Ehmke of the Detroit Tigers set an American League record for fastest pitching performance in a 9 inning game by defeating the New York Yankees 1-0 in 1 hour and 13 minutes.

1931 - Bob Burke of the Washington Senators no-hit the Boston Red Sox.

1970 - The New York Yankees retired Casey Stengel's #37.

1985 - Major League Baseball players returned to work after a two-day walkout.

1988 - Jose Canseco of the Oakland Athletics became the 11th player in baseball history with 30 home runs and 30 steals in one season.

1992 - The "Dream Team" clinched the gold medal in men's basketball at the Summer Olympic Games in Barcelona, Spain with a 117-85 win over Croatia.

1996 - Eddie Murray of the Baltimore Orioles moved into 15th place on the career home run list when he hit his 494th home run.

1998 - Paul Molitor of the Minnesota Twins stole his 500th career base.

1999 - Wade Boggs recorded his 3,000th hit.

2002 - Major League Baseball players and owners agreed to a $100,000 increase in baseball minimum salary. The minimum was set at $300,000 starting in 2003.

2005 - The Phoenix Coyotes announced that Wayne Gretzky would become their next head coach.

2008 - The Summer Olympic Games opened in Beijing, China. An estimated billion people watched the opening ceremonies on television worldwide.
