1921 - Due to a technicality, eight players from the Chicago White Sox accused in the Black Sox scandal of throwing the 1919 World Series were acquitted, however commissioner Kenesaw Mountain Landis threw them out of baseball for life.
1936 - American sprinter Jesse Owens won the first of his four gold medals at the Summer Olympics in Berlin after winning the 100 meter dash.
1949 - The National Basketball Association was formed through a merger of the Basketball Association of America and the National Basketball League. There were 17 original members. They were: Boston Celtics, Chicago Stags, Cleveland Rebels, Detroit Falcons, New York Knickerbockers, Philadelphia Warriors (now Golden State Warriors), Pittsburgh Ironmen, Providence Steamrollers, St. Louis Bombers, Toronto Huskies, Washington Capitols, Ft. Wayne Pistons (now Detroit Pistons), Minneapolis Lakers (now Los Angeles Lakers), Rochester Royals (now Sacramento Kings), Tri-City Blackhawks (now Atlanta Hawks), Syracuse Nationals (now Philadelphia 76ers) and Baltimore Bullets.
