1485 - England's King Richard III was killed in the Battle of Bosworth Field, ending the War of the Roses.

1642 - The English Civil War began between supporters of King Charles I (Royalists or Cavaliers) and those of Oliver Cromwell (Roundheads).

1775 - King George III proclaimed the American colonies to be in open rebellion.

1787 - Inventor John Fitch demonstrated his steamboat on the Delaware River to delegates from the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia.

1846 - The United States annexed New Mexico.

1902 - Theodore Roosevelt became the first U.S. president to ride in an automobile.

1910 - Korea was annexed by Japan after five years as a protectorate.

2004 - A version of Edvard Munch's painting "The Scream" was stolen in Norway. Another version had been stolen in 1994.

2005 - The last Jewish settlers left the Gaza Strip, ending decades of Israel's turbulent occupation.

1950 - Althea Gibson became the first black tennis player to be accepted into a national competition.

1951 - 75,052 people watched the Harlem Globetrotters perform in Berlin. It was the largest crowd to see a basketball game.

1959 - Cincinnati Reds' Frank Robinson hits three consecutive home runs.

1965 - San Francisco Giants' pitcher Juan Marachal hits Los Angeles Dodgers' catcher John Roseboro on the head with his bat causing a 14-minute brawl.

1972 - Due to its racial policies, Rhodesia was asked to withdraw from the 20th Olympic Summer Games.

1984 - American Evelyn Ashford ties the women's world record in the 100 meter dash with a time of 10.76 seconds.

1984 - New York Mets' pitcher Dwight Gooden becomes the 11th rookie to strikeout 200.

1989 - Nolan Ryan records his 5,000th career strikeout.

2001 - Brett Hull signed a 2 year deal for $9 million with the Detroit Red Wings.

2003 - Albert Pujols (St. Louis Cardinals) went 0-5 to end a 30-game hitting streak.

2007 - The Texas Rangers became the first major league baseball team in 110 years to score 30 runs in a game after a 30-3 rout of the Baltimore Orioles.

2008 - Usain Bolt captures a third gold medal and a third world record at the Beijing Olympic Games, as Jamaica wins the men's 4x100m relay gold in world record of 37.10 seconds.
