1862 - The Civil War Battle of Shiloh began.

1886 - The Canadian city of Vancouver, British Columbia was incorporated.

1909 - Robert Peary and Matthew Henson became the first to reach the North Pole.

1917 - The United States declared war on Germany and entered World War I.

1954 - Sen. Joseph McCarthy (R-Wisconsin), responding to CBS newsman Edward R. Murrow's broadside against him on "See It Now", said in remarks filmed for the program that Murrow had, in the past, "engaged in propaganda for Communist causes."

1965 - The United States launched Intelsat I, also known as the "Early Bird" communications satellite, into geosynchronous orbit.

1980 - 3M introduced its "Post-It Notes", a re-branding of a product formerly known as "Press 'n Peel".

1998 - The Dow Jones industrial average closed above 9,000 points for the first time.

1998 - Pakistan successfully tested a medium-range missile capable of striking neighboring India.

2001 - Algerian national Ahmed Ressam, accused of bringing explosives into the United States days before the millennium celebrations, was convicted on terror charges.

2005 - Prince Rainier III of Monaco died at age 81.

2011 - Portugal became the third debt-stressed European country to need a bailout as the prime minister announced his country would request international assistance.

2014 - Actor Mickey Rooney died in North Hollywood, California at age 93.

1893 - Andy Bowen and Jack Burke box 7 hours 19 minutes to no decision in Saint Louis (111 rounds, longest bout in boxing history).

1896 - The first modern Olympic Games opened in Athens, Greece. 60,000 spectators welcomed 280 athletes from 13 different countries to participate in 43 events. James Connolly of the United States won the first Olympic gold medal awarded.

1936 - Horton Smith wins the Masters.

1941 - Craig Wood wins the Masters.

1947 - Jimmy Demaret wins the Masters.

1952 - Sam Snead wins the Masters for the second time.

1958 - Arnold Palmer wins the Masters.

1973 - The Pittsburgh Pirates retire Roberto Clemente's number.

1973 - New York Yankees' Ron Blomberg becomes major league baseball's first designated hitter, he draws a walk.

1980 - Gordie Howe completes a record 26th hockey season.

1987 - Sugar Ray Leonard upsets Marvelous Marvin Hagler for the middleweight boxing crown.

1992 - Duke defeats Michigan 71-51 to win the NCAA tournament.

1996 - Major League Soccer makes its debut in the United States with an overflow crowd of 31,683 packed in Spartan Stadium to watch the San Jose Clash defeat D.C. United 1-0 in the league's inaugural game. Clash forward Eric Wynalda scores the first goal in MLS history.

1997 - Mario Lemieux (Pittsburgh Penguins) announced that he would retire from the National Hockey League (NHL) following the playoffs of the current season.

2004 - The University of Connecticut became the first school to win NCAA Division I men's and women's basketball titles in the same season as the women's team defeated Tennessee 70-61 for their third consecutive championship.

2009 - North Carolina defeats Michigan State 89-72 to win the NCAA tournament.

2014 - WrestleMania XXX was held at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans. The top matches on the card saw Daniel Bryan defeat Batista and Randy Orton to win the WWE World Heavyweight Championship and Brock Lesnar defeated The Undertaker, snapping his WrestleMania undefeated streak.

2015 - Duke defeated Wisconsin 68-63 to win the NCAA tournament.
