1500 - Pedro Alvares Cabral discovered Brazil and claimed it for Portugal.

1509 - Henry VIII became king of England following the death of his father, Henry VII.

1616 - Spanish poet Cervantes died in Madrid.

1864 - Congress authorized the inscription "In God We Trust" on coins minted as U.S. currency.

1870 - Communist revolutionary Vladimir Lenin was born Vladimir Ilyich Ulyanov in Simbirsk, Russia.

1889 - The land rush began in Oklahoma when it was opened to settlers.

1915 - The first full-scale use of deadly chemicals in warfare took place as German forces unleashed chlorine gas against Allied troops at the start of the Second Battle of Ypres in Belgium during World War I; thousands of soldiers are believed to have died.

1937 - Thousands of college students in New York City staged a “peace strike” opposing American entry into another possible world conflict.

1944 - During World War II, U.S. forces began invading Japanese-held New Guinea with amphibious landings at Hollandia and Aitape.

1954 - The televised Senate Army-McCarthy hearings began.

1970 - Earth Day was observed for the first time.

1983 - The West German news magazine Stern announced the discovery of personal diaries purportedly written by Adolf Hitler that turned out to be a hoax.

1993 - The U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum was dedicated in Washington, D.C.

1994 - Richard M. Nixon, the 37th president of the United States (1969-1974), died of a stroke at age 81 in New York City.

2000 - Armed immigration agents took Elian Gonzalez from the Miami home of his relatives and returned him to his father.

2005 - Zacarias Moussaoui pleaded guilty in federal court to conspiring with the Sept. 11 hijackers to kill Americans. (He was later sentenced to life in prison.)

2010 - The Deepwater Horizon oil platform, operated by BP, sank into the Gulf of Mexico two days after a massive explosion that killed 11 workers.

2012 - The U.S. and Afghanistan reached a deal on a strategic partnership agreement ensuring that Americans would provide military and financial support to the Afghan people for at least a decade beyond 2014, the deadline for most foreign forces to withdraw.

2016 - Leaders from 175 countries signed the Paris Agreement on climate change at the United Nations as the landmark deal took a key step toward entering into force years ahead of schedule.

2021 - The Supreme Court, in a 6-3 ruling, made it easier to sentence minors convicted of murder to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

1876 - Eight baseball teams began the inaugural season of the National League. In the first game Boston beat Philadelphia 6-5.

1903 - The New York Highlanders (Yankees) play their first game, a 3-1 loss to the Washington Senators.

1914 - Babe Ruth made his pitching debut with the Baltimore Orioles.

1915 - The New York Yankees debuted their now iconic pinstripe uniform.

1945 - The Toronto Maple Leafs defeated the Detroit Red Wings to win the Stanley Cup.

1947 - The Philadelphia Warriors defeat the Chicago Stags in six games to win the inaugural Baseball Association of America championship.

1954 - The NBA adopts the 24-second shot clock and the six foul rule.

1955 - The Athletics play their first baseball game in Kansas City after having moved from Philadelphia.

1962 - The Toronto Maple Leafs defeat the Chicago Blackhawks to win the Stanley Cup.

1982 - The Atlanta Braves ended their 13-game winning streak to start the season. It was the longest streak of wins at the beginning of the season in major league baseball history.

1990 - The Indianapolis Colts select Illinois quarterback Jeff George with the first pick in the NFL Draft.

1994 - Michael Moorer became the first left-handed heavyweight boxing champion.

1995 - The Cincinnati Bengals select Penn State running back Ki-Jana Carter with the first pick in the NFL Draft.

2003 - Patrick Roy plays in his final NHL game.

2004 - Pro football player Pat Tillman, who'd traded in a multi-million dollar contract to serve as an Army Ranger in Afghanistan, was killed by friendly fire.

2010 - The St. Louis Rams select Oklahoma quarterback Sam Bradford with the first pick in the NFL Draft.
