Tim Beck to Texas

OSU hired Greg Schiano as an ex-NFL coach to come in as their Co-DC. If only there was another ex-NFL coach out of SF who just became available who could be hired to be the new Co-OC. Nah just kidding. I just would like to see those two egos (Kelly and Meyer) in the same room.

Kevin Wilson at Ohio State will be interesting. His offense was very good at OU and at Indiana prior to this past season. Both Saban and Urban are not afraid to take previously fired coaches off the scrap heap.

Gigs with Urban and Herman. The guy does something [football related ;) ] that decent coaches are looking for.
He is an extremely creative offensive mind. Listen to Urban Meyer's reaction to this play call by Beck. I'm convinced this play alone got him that OC job.

Definitely like hiring of D-Will. Need to see more moves like this.

So that's a big boy move, good to know.

Now, Davis choosing Nebraska [Riley] over Michigan [Harbaugh], what's that?

Another one, when Keith Williams received his raise and extension a year ago to fight off NFL teams, was that a big boy move?

Urban was present for us getting boat-raced that day 45-17 with one of the flattest performances on a gray dreary day in AA I had seen up until that day. If he hired Beck based upon our performance that day, he definitely saw something I did not see.

Our performance for all of Beck's tenure was generally poor. I just said he does have talent as an offensive mind, he is a lousy QB coach. Anyone can see that from what he did to Barrett.

Big boy programs hire the very best head coaches and coordinators regardless of cost. They make splash hires that provide a jolt to the program and energize the recruiting base. These moves can trickle down to the position coaches, but they start at the top.

You didn't answer either question.

What's confusing? I liked the D-Will hire. Was it an immediate game-changer? National news? Did it ignite the recruiting base?

Losing something compared to a big boy hire isn't the same.

DWills is a proven commodity but the other two aren't?

How has our program immediately flipped, due to his hire?

He's an assistant coach, and you said about assistants, "the impact is not as direct".

Like I said, confusing, but thanks for the responses.

But what is your deeper point? That the Riley hire was another swing and a miss? That we needed to hire a big splash guy who would immediately bring national mojo? Who would that have been?

I never said that D-Will was a big boy move. I only said I liked the hire. Hope this helps.

The day MR was hired, I said that it was "underwhelming" to me. Much better than his predecessor, a complete 180 degree turn. But it signaled to me a lukewarm hire that would take the long road (hopefully) to progress.

You guys got it all wrong. Beck wanted out of OSU before Burrow took over as the #1 QB. He wasn't good enough to be at Nebraska let alone Ohio State.

Ironically, rumor on a tOSU site has Burrow possibly transferring out to the Fighting Frankies.

Beck/Warriner worked wonders with Reesing at KU, but couldn't seem to duplicate it at OSU.

Why would Burrow transfer to Ohio U? I haven't followed them closely, but wasn't he #2 QB for them this year? Or just against us?

Hell with Ohio

His dad coaches there. Who knows, maybe Urban has told him he won't be the starter next year. Maybe he dislikes Urban.

Herman and Beck coached together at OSU, I believe. Beck may be tired of dealing with Urban and it seems natural for Herman to go with someone he knows. I shudder to think what Urban might do with a really good OC.
Good Lord help us, Urban might even score.

Beck is a helluva a bunch better than NU fans give him credit for. He put up a ton of yards and points with a lunatic screaming profanity at him in his headset most of the game. Imagine what he might do with a sane head coach. The guy is a great recruiter that is widely respected in Texas football circles. I will be very surprised if he doesn't do well at UT. Kind of a dream job for him I suspect.

I think Beck has a good mind for offense and is a creative play designer. But he really struggles with play calling. Remember when he gave Zeke Elliot like 5 carries in a half of the conference championship game? Also, he doesn't develop QBs, which has been an issue at his last two stops. For the sake of Texas (puke), they need to have a QB coach.

The thread with the rumors were saying Haskins was going to be the guy at QB...also, as stated, his dad coaches for Frank at Ohio (DC and Asst HC).

I don't get the disdain for Beck but then again, Nebraska hasn't liked an O coordinator since Tom hung them up. Is that about right?
