Thursday notebook: Six Husker walk-ons earn scholarships
***Head coach Mike Riley announced that six walk-ons had been awarded scholarships for this season: center Cole Conrad, fullback Luke McNitt, tight end Tyler Hoppes, tight end Connor Ketter, wide receiver Gabe Rahn, and wide receiver Brett Classen.
***Riley said there were some other walk-ons also still under consideration to earn scholarships, as NU could give out two more if they choose.
***Riley said no final decisions have been made on the redshirt statuses of NU’s true freshmen, but said the staff was getting close and would likely discuss it through the weekend. Riley said some guys were “pretty defined” but there were others who they’re still not sure on.
***One freshman who won’t redshirt is receiver Tyjon Lindsey. Riley said he’s been telling his offensive coaches to “coach this guy and get him ready to play.”
***Riley said receiver Keyan Williams finally returned to action earlier this week after missing significant time with a hamstring injury, but Riley said Williams re-injured his hammy after “a minute, maybe two minutes” of practice. The timeframe for his return is unknown at this point.
***With Williams out, Riley said J.D. Spielman will be the No. 1 slot receiver for the season opener.
***Running back Tre Bryant (knee) said the practices he’s missed this fall were purely precautionary, and that he was ready to get the season going.
***Bryant also said he’s currently not on the depth chart at kickoff returner, the spot he manned last season.
***Riley said quarterback Tanner Lee did not throw the ball at all on Thursday, as the coaches wanted to give him arm some rest. Lee still practiced and took reps on running plays and pre-snap checks, but all of the throwing drills went to Patrick O’Brien and Tristan Gebbia.
Riley said Lee would go back to his normal throwing workload on Friday.
***Riley said despite the inexperience at the position, he’s not worried about the depth at wide receiver. He pointed to guys like Lindsey, Spielman, Rahn, Classen, Bryan Reimers, and Conor Young as players they trust will be able to step up and play this year.
***Asked about being dubbed “the coolest coach in college football”, Riley would only say about his coolness: “It’s sneaky. That’s all I’m going to say about it.”
***Cornerback Eric Lee said cornerbacks coach Donte Williams has told his group to be “borderline cocky” on the field and to get in their opponents’ heads. Williams has also stressed keeping your composure and not showing emotions after bad plays, because if opposing coaches see you’re frustrated, they’re going to go at you all game.
