Mark Manning's squad is shaping up to be a well rounded diverse mix of experience and youth. About half of the 10 starters are seniors, which is honestly rare in Div 1 wrestling. Manning, along with assistant Bryan Snyder, have done a great job of evaluating and developing talent as of late; it helps to have alums Jordan Burroughs and James Green still behind the scenes in terms of both instruction and recruiting. I will give a cliff notes summary of what I have learned after two larger tournaments, weight by weight (and by my memory so there may be a couple of mistakes!).

125: Senior Tim Lambert is rated about 10th in the nation and looks improved from last year. He did however struggle to beat his back up in Ames this past weekend winning by a point to Kris Williams. I predict an All American finish in his final season.... Say 7th place.

133: Senior Eric Montanya is rated fourth in most polls. Very much improved over two years ago. Last year was a breakout season for him as he earned all American status. He was invited to the preseason all star dual and lost 4-3 against the second ranked wrestler from Illinois. A repeat looks to be in order and hopefully he can make the finals and go out a champion! Predict 2nd place.

141: There are three pretty even wrestlers here, but I would guess that Colton McCrystal holds a slight advantage over big time freshman recruit Chad Red. They wrestled in the finals at Ames and I believe the final was 13-9 in a see saw match. Purrington is in the mix as well. McCrystal came into the rankings at #15 this week I believe. Predict a National Tournament birth going 2-2.

149: A couple guys here that are trying to replace a graduated jake sueflohn. I am blanking on names. They are solid, but young, placing in the middle of their brackets the last few weeks. Predict a year away from going to nationals.

157: Junior? Tyler Berger has solidified this spot. He made nationals last year and he appears to have gained major strides over the off season. He is ranked about 8th I beleive... And in this weight class that is where I predict he finishes......

Half way done and I need to come back to this! Thanks for reading.....

They got a commitment from the 2 time Nebraska state champion from Ashland yesterday, Trevor Nicholson. same kid that ran for over 400 yds in 1 game this year.

Because of the overwhelming response, I will continue on! Hopefully the Rifle team keeps their distance......

Bomber 89: Trevor will be a nice addition of home flavor, in the mold of home grown talents Craig Brester, Austin Wilson, and Aaron Studebaker. Hopefully he can have as much success as those three Huskers! He was flirting with playing football at the next level at places like Iowa State or the Dakota schools but eventually decided the mats in Lincoln were the best fit for him.

165: Several wrestlers battling at this weight for the starting spot. Dustin Williams, Bye, and a transfer from another D1 program are the names coming to mind. They are solid, but need to step up to qualify for the National Tournament. I am optimistic that by the end of the year one of them does just that.

174: Junior? Micah Barnes has had some great wins and some head scratching loses over the last year but he maintains about a #12 ranking. He has the ability to become an All-American, but he may be a year away. I predict a heartbreak round loss at Nationals going 3-2, one match away from all american status.

184: Senior TJ Dudley returns as our highest placing All American since Jordan Burroughs, placing second last year. His consistency seems improved this year. Hopefully that continues and his gas tank gets 15% bigger. He is currently ranked fourth behind some serious studs. I predict he AAs but I have no idea if he wins it all, or gets 8th.

197: Senior Aaron Studebaker of Raymond Central is rated in the top 8, but he has had a couple of close loses to unranked opponents. His strength is his consistency and endurance, but he needs to become more explosive if he hopes to become an AA in my opinion. I predict a heartbreak round win and going out with a 7th place medal at Nationals in March.

285: Senior Cody Jensen is ranked 15th and has made it to the National Tournament before. I am hoping for a break out season for Mr. Jensen and a few fortuitous bounces in March to get him to AA status. I predict a heartbreak round appearance. His backup is his younger brother.

Team: They are ranked 7th and 10th in a couple of different polls. They will struggle to get into the top five, but hopefully they are in the top ten at the end of the season. Less than 10th means that we struggled to get more than two AAs, which would be a huge disappointment. I think 5 AAs is a good goal for the team and two finalists. IF that happens they will be close to the top 5 finish, depending on how the other top teams perform.

Go Huskers! In all activities!!!

Hey, I don't post just to up the post count, but you sounded like you needed some affirmation.

Appreciate any wrestling updates.

My buddy & I used to go to Midlands every year at NorthWestern. Was funny watching him meet Jordan Burroughs. He was star struck.

Tonight's match vs W Va starts in 15 minutes on BTN PLUS

The match that Studabaker lost tonight are the ones he absolutely has to win in a couple months..... Gotta get some offense going!

42-6 was the final team score.... Travel to Wyoming tomorrow to take on an improving Cowboy squad, GBR!

I just never know if people want to hear about wrestling on this site. My comment was pointed toward Mr. Sarcasm, Charlie Marrow, who quickly posted a "Thoughts on the Husker Rifle Team" thread right after I did. And it was funny as hell because I posted this thread in part because of the thread entitled "Thoughts on Nebraska Basketball". So I am waiting for a post entitled "Thoughts on the Husker Speech Team"!

I will continue to post some wrestling updates throughout the year. GBR!

Keep up the posts. I enjoy trying to follow the Husker wrestling team (and all Husker teams), and it is not always easy. Reading a recap in the OWH isn't enough to get a flavor for how they are doing.

Thanks for the post Cloud. Appreciate it. I love to watch Husker wrestling. My oldest son was a state finalist a couple years ago. I hadn't really watched much wrestling before he started in HS, but really gained an appreciation for it.
